Johannes Grenzfurthner at monochrom wrote to inform PervScan readers about the upcoming Arse Elektronika conference in San Francisco. Like Ars Electronica, its venerable peer, Arse Elektronika is a festival of technology and art. Unlike Ars Electronica, it features science fiction — and lots of sex.

This year’s Arse Elektronika includes a conference offering “critical perspectives on sexuality and pornography in science and social fiction.” There will be “a curated erotic reading evening, featuring writers who commonly explore sexual themes in their science fiction and alt-reality fiction work.” There will be an award presented “for sex machines, orgasmotrons and teledildonics.” And finally there will be an anthology titled pr0nnovation?. The tome is being put out jointly by monochrom and what is undoubtedly one of the most important alternative publishers of the last few decades, Re/Search.

The festival will be taking place September 25-28, 2008, in San Francisco. Unfortunately Supervert will not be able to attend, but perhaps you can? For more information, see the Arse Elektronikca web site.

PervScan regular Geek Space sent a link to columnist Tristan Taormino’s essay “Girls Love Gay Male Porn.” “I think this tidbit is cool,” wrote Geek Space, “and I’d love to have some Supervert insights into it…”

First off, it should be noted that Ms. Taormino is a very intelligent writer at the forefront of gender studies. In a way, what she writes about is quite different than what usually appears on PervScan. For her, perv is probably a sex-positive term with radical political meanings for gender and identity. For PervScan, perv isn’t quite so ideological a term. The pervs featured here are usually on their way to jail for fucking animals, kids, or corpses. The gender of these pervs is typically male. Their identity isn’t a matter of gender-bending. It’s a matter of mug shots.

Taormino’s column begins with the observation that straight women like gay porn — which isn’t very perplexing to contemplate, given that straight men like lesbian porn too. But what about queer women who like to watch gay male porn?

Another person chimed in: “Do you like fag porn? All my queer female friends do.” Hers wasn’t a surprising question. I know lesbians who dig it more than any other kind of hardcore fare. I briefly dated a genderqueer dyke who just loved gay male porn: She ran out and got the newest title from her favorite company the day it came out. In this case, she adored movies from Bel Ami (belamionline.com), which feature young, hairless European lads (think the boy-on-boy version of the straight barely-legal genre). The boys are very pretty and androgynous, and some of them could definitely be mistaken for dykes with their clothes on. But other girl-loving girls love über-butch men, leather daddies, and big hairy bears, so it’s not always about androgyny. By now, I think it’s commonplace to accept that queer women love queer male porn, but what is that all about?

By way of explanation, Taormino points out that there is a relative paucity of “lesbian porn produced by and for lesbians.” Evidently lesbians aren’t attracted to the sort of “lesbian porn” that is produced for straight men. Furthermore, notes Taormino, many lesbians “identify with various forms of masculinity.” The implication seems to be that, when such a lesbian enjoys viewing gay male porn, it’s because in her own mind she’s sort of a man — thus she becomes like one of those men who enjoys watching gay male porn.

If all this starts to sound convoluted, perhaps that is precisely the point. Anything goes. Gender studies can’t help but intersect perverse behavior because, out there in the wilds, there are inevitably people who harbor the strangest combinations of desire. There are gay men inhabiting the bodies of women and making like lesbians. There are children lusting inside the bodies of adults — pedophiles. There are animals lusting for other animals inside the bodies of humans. There are cocks that want to be feet, vaginas that wish they were assholes, and assholes that might as well be duffle bags, given what people shove into them.

Controversial new legislation being enacted in England does not target the production of “extreme” pornography, as some laws do, but the possesion of it. It targets not the pornographer but the consumer. In sending the link to a BBC article reviewing the obvious dilemmas raised by the law, Chad offered the following thoughts.

Hi PervScan dude…

A new law is being passed in the UK on 8 May 2008 that bans “violent and extreme pornography.” Now at first you might think, “Good! We’ll stick that sort of stuff on the same list as child porn and snuff etc.” but once you read the article you realise that “pornographic material which depicts necrophilia, bestiality or violence that is life threatening or likely to result in serious injury to the anus, breasts or genitals has no place in a modern society and should not be tolerated,” says a spokeswoman for the ministry of justice.

Depicts?

If the acts being carried out are real i.e. a real rape, a dude screwing a real corpse etc, then of course the authorities should intervine. But if pornography is made by a legitimate studio, with paid actors, who “act” and use special effects and plot etc to drive a story, then to watch it would be a crime?!?!

I’ve seen Hollywood blockbuster films with major stars that have scenes that would turn you onto a criminal if you still fucking own them? Rape scene from The Accused anyone? Boxing Helena? A Clockwork Orange?

I understand why they are introducing the law, as they think that if people watch violent porn, then they will act out in real life what they have seen and what fuels their desire… But what people should be focusing on in my opinion is what created the desire in the first place. I would think most of these people harbour a fetish for violent sex and seek this material out. I don’t belive people accidently come across violent porn and then become addicted to it, and then go on to act it out.

In fact apart from one case i’m aware of (the Graham Coutts case), i’ve never seen violent porn mentioned as a catalyst for a violent sex crime.

I think more murder and sex crime has been commited by people devoted to the bible/religious causes then pornography! (Just type “priest” and “rape” together in google and search…) But I dont see anyone in any hurry to outlaw the Bible or priests or catholics etc.

And just to finish off, I’m in no way a champion for keeping violent porn on the shelves or internet, my cup of tea is nice fit lasses with lush round bums all oiled up… oh yeah!!, I just think that when censorship or a ban comes into play, then who are the people making the laws and how in touch are they with the real world? And where does it end?

Amen, Chad. The principle behind the law is monkey see monkey do. But if people really acted out the things they see in movies and read in books, you’d have to outlaw nearly every “pernicious influence” except, uh, hell… What would be left to read? Math books? Here’s a prediction. If there were nothing left in the world to read but math books, people would learn to apply numbers to their basest urges. Calculus can be a dangerous weapon in the hands of anyone trying to plot the trajectory of a bomb. And if a rapist had no language other than trigonometry, he would dream of his evil deeds in functions and formulae.

The recent poll attempting to rank the perversions produced some very fascinating results. Necrophilia is clearly the kink that the majority of you considers most perverse, in spite of some compelling arguments that pedophilia is more perverse because more harmful to the victim. Presumably there is a strong visceral response underlying the perceived perversity of necrophilia, and yet there are probably ways you could reframe the question to lessen that gut reaction. For example, suppose some freaked-out torturer forced you to choose between these alternatives: embrace the cadaver of a beautiful person or smear yourself with the excrement of an equally beautiful person. Which would you really find more repugnant?

Tellingly, no one (to date) has voted for coprophilia or necrophilia as the least perverse of perversions. So far the majority of you think the least perverse kink is voyeurism. Probably this is because we all harbor little voyeurs in our heads. But there is a difference between the low-grade voyeurism of the “normal” person and the higher-grade act of peeping in windows, setting up surveillance cameras in the showers of roommates, and so forth. To emphasize this distinction, Peter emailed PervScan a brief essay on the connection between voyeurism and serial murder.

Peeping Tom and Serial Murder: A Definitive Link

First of all, let me clarify what I’m going to talk about. The crime of Peeping Tom is directly linked to an escalation in crime, which eventually leads, in some cases, to serial murder.

For most of PervScan’s readers, Peeping Tom might be considered a relatively harmless voyeuristic pursuit. After all, usually the man watches the woman in her bedroom or bathroom, undressing, dressing or showering, and is widely believed the man gets his rocks off and leaves soon after.

For most cases this is true, but in a number of cases over the last 10 years, Peeping Tom criminals change their criminal acts.

Some voyeurs get bored with merely being a Peeping Tom. Others get so good at it that the risk of being caught is so low that it’s no longer fun (half the fun is the risk of getting caught). Others enjoy what they see so much that they want more!

Peeping Tom can quickly graduate (with honours!) to public indecency or residential burglary. If burglary is chosen by the Peeping Tom, sometimes it’s a purely sexual burglary: a burglary without the reasoning to steal a victim’s goods. It’s a sexual crime, just because they are in the house their victim has been inside while he/she looked at her.

After the escalation to public indecency (exposing oneself), or residential burglary, it again escalates after 3-12 months to full-on confrontations, usually sexual assault or full-blown rape. Again, eventually the criminals get bored with sex, and want to hurt (sadism) and kill (murder) the victim.

Over the last 10 years there have been countless examples of the link between Peeping Tom and Serial Murder.

Derrick Todd Lee — a black serial killer infamous for murdering women all over Baton Rouge and Louisiana, started off as a peeping tom in the mid-late 90s.

Mark Dixie — a white Peeping Tom-turned-Serial Killer from Croydon, South London and Surrey. In 2001, he masturbated in front of several women using telephone booths all over London. DNA was taken in every instance, and was matched to that of Sally Anne Bowman’s killer.

Ted Bundy — Peeping Tom-turned-Serial Killer. “He became a Peeping Tom. He occasionally disabled a woman’s car to make her more vulnerable, without actually doing anything to her. He found these behaviors sexually arousing and masturbated while doing them. He also began shoplifting for expensive items and told his mom that they were gifts. He was picked up at least twice by juvenile authorities for suspicion of auto theft and burglary, but nothing came of it.”

Tatsuya Ichihachi — Japanese Peeping Tom-turned-murderer. “In early 2007 in Japan, 22 year old Lindsay Hawker was found dead in the apartment belonging to her student Tatsuya Ichihachi. Ichihachi was a confessed peeping Tom who had sick violent fantasies. Hawker was found dead in a bath of sand in his apartment. The bath tub was actually filled with sand with the victim placed inside. Police found her nude with bruises covering her boy, and her hand was sticking out from her ‘grave.’ Hawker’s torn clothes were found close by.”

DSM IV Classification

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual-IV, certain voyeuristic fantasies, urges and behavior patterns are classified as a paraphilia with code 302.82.[1]

Criminalization

In some cultures, voyeurism is considered to be deviant and even a sex crime. In the United Kingdom, non-consensual voyeurism became a criminal offense on May 1, 2004, under section 67 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003 .

Diagnostics

This Paraphilia is characterized by sexual fantasies, urges, or behaviors involving observing an unknowing and non-consenting person, usually unclothed and/or engaged in sexual activity, to produce sexual excitement.
Diagnostic criteria for 302.82 Voyeurism

( cautionary statement)

A. Over a period of at least 6 months, recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving the act of observing an unsuspecting person who is naked, in the process of disrobing, or engaging in sexual activity.

B. The person has acted on these urges, or the sexual urges or fantasies cause marked distress or interpersonal difficulty.

Reprinted with permission from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision. Copyright 2000 American Psychiatric Association

Maybe it’s time we re-think what a “harmless” voyeuristic act can really cause to happen.

Although I only mentioned 4 cases, there are well in excess of 30 I know of, mostly in America, where Peeping Tom has eventually led to Serial Murder.

That serial killers should engage in voyeuristic behavior is not surprising, but it is not clear that there is a symmetrical link between the two. In other words, the fact that serial killers tend to be voyeurs does not mean that voyeurs have a propensity for serial murder. In any event, to recognize a link between the two may well restore to voyeurism some of its perversity.

Hopefully it’s pretty obvious that PervScan is not a dating site. Not only is there no mechanism here for actually meeting other people, PervScan’s policy on comments deliberately makes it difficult (for liability reasons) to hook up with someone. Nevertheless the PervScan mailbag still receives emails like the following from Fernando:

Can you help me in this site finding me a sex partner to do coprophilia.

Well, Fernando, you write the same way that Borat speaks, so presumably English is not your native language. Perhaps you misunderstood the intent of the site. To be clear, PervScan does not keep an active roster of coprophiles to introduce you to. The site scans for pervs. It does not pimp them.

In a more general sense, it’s possible you could pick up a few pointers about coprophilia by reading the stories on PervScan. For example, this story might show you that it’s a bad idea to hide yourself in an outhouse septic tank. Or if this story is to believed, there may be furtive groups of coprophiles lurking amongst law enforcement personnel. You should be cautious arranging coprophiliac trysts with police, however. If you approach an officer and offer to shit in his mouth, he may well find some excuse to arrest you.

For that matter, you fail to specify whether it’s your pleasure to give or receive. No doubt it is easier to find people to piss or shit on you than it is to find people to drink your pee or smear themselves with your feces. When seeking coprophiliac partners, you might do well to invert the traditional holiday formula and remind yourself that it’s better to receive than to give.

As usual, the PervScan mailbag remains a source of both comedy and tragedy. The tragedy is that sometimes emails are pathetic pleas for help with various sexually related frustrations and woes. The comedy is that sometimes guys like Dan write:

Can you please send me a catalogue / booklist to [address deleted]. I have a particular food fetish for cheese I hope you can help me find material for. I live with my girlfriend who does not understand this so discretion is appreciated.

For the record, Supervert has published two books — Extraterrestrial Sex Fetish and Necrophilia Variations — in addition to its various web sites. None of them concern cheese or any other sort of food fetish, though perhaps you stumbled on PervScan by googling “Police Arrest Cheese Covered Naked Man” (which happens to be the top result if you search for “cheese fetish”).

Your email reminded PervScan of the time when, as a wee lad, he found himself with a friend in a magazine store. Furtively scanning porn magazines, the two stumbled on a glossy that featured pictures of naked women sitting spread-eagled on top of pizzas. The images were very puzzling. Why would naked women sit on pizzas? Wouldn’t they get melted cheese twisted into their pubes? Tomato sauce burning its way into their vaginas? And what sort of person would find this sexy? Was this a joke, a gross-out caricature of the notion of “eating out” a woman? The magazine was left in the rack, but it left long-term reverberations, unanswered questions in the minds of the boys who had seen it. In that pre-internet age, it was the instigation of a conceptual revolution, a window onto inscrutable forms of sexuality.

And now, all these years later, your email suggests an answer. Why, that magazine store must have been the one place in the world to cater to cheese fetishists. You and people like you would have thrilled to see mozzarella sticking to the labia of some third-rate porn queen. But then that just points to another question: how many of you are there? Enough to support your own publication?

PervScan receives more than its fair share of weird email. Most of it is absolute garbage, but sometimes there are requests for personal advice. Invariably these are difficult to handle, since you don’t want to be a jerk to people who are sincerely seeking advice about some personal matter, but at the same time it’s absurd to give “personal” advice to some nameless, faceless person who’s described their plight in a mere email. For example, here’s a recent one:

Hello. I am currently a girl living in New Zealand. I wish to get a sex change to a male. If possible could you please email me back with any information on this producer as well as as many places round world that does it and costs invovled. I will be looking forward to your reply. Many thanks, Tinkz

Well, Tinkz, PervScan is a site dedicated to the analysis and sometimes mockery of a wide array of perverse sexual acts. It’s not exactly the optimal place to approach for advice about such a drastic procedure. Probably you should begin with a medical doctor, or perhaps with an organization that serves the local gay, lesbian, and transgender community. Beyond that, PervScan can’t really tell you how to go about locating the right doctor for you.

However, PervScan can tell you how not to go about it. You’re contemplating performing a potentially irreversible operation on your body. You have to be responsible. Consequently, do not half-assedly blast out emails to sites like PervScan that have no medical credentials whatsoever. Do not arrange your surgery over the internet and show up at some guy’s basement or garage expecting a successful operation. Do not buy hormones or steriods or other drugs from illicit online sources. And for God’s sake, if anybody offers to sell you a penis, be suspicious — be very suspicious.

What’s the first thing you do when you want to make a major purchase? You do research! You compare prices, bone up on technical details, read reviews, compare experiences with other people who’ve bought the same thing. It’s a natural process — but if you’re suffering from unnatural lusts, it’s not so easy. Where do you go to find reviews of products that cater to your libido? Well, one resource is Sex Toy Testers. Their mission is to provide “honest independent reviews of sex toys and products on the market.” It’s the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval for items intended for your crotch.

Suie, one of the proprietors of Sex Toy Testers, just sent this email to PervScan:

SexShop Awards 2006 are now up and running as of today. Sex Shops are still able to join at any time — they just need to fill in an online form with their details. Would you consider adding a link to your site pointing the awards? Thanks. Suie

Sex Shop Awards — the idea is to determine the best online sex shops by letting the public vote for them. The candidates have been divvied up into eleven categories — Adult Magazines, Adult Novelties, BDSM, Books, Condoms, DVDs & Videos, Lingerie, Penis Enhancement, Sex Enhancing Drugs, SexToys, and Good All Round Sex Shop — and you can choose your favorite from each.

So if you have any experience buying sex-related items online, go vote! You have nothing to lose but your virginity — well, no, you’ve probably already lost that anyway…

It’s not unusual to hear a professional dominatrix speak of her wealthy clientele, nouveau riche types who blow their stock dividends on spanking sessions or nipple torture. But here’s the opposite: not a wealthy person looking for some S&M fun, but someone with S&M fun looking for capital.

I am an indie filmmaker in San Francisco. I have written a sort of mainstream script that has a strong S&M feel to the story. I have a name-recognized cast and a fairly famous musician attached to the film right now. I have some investors and am still looking for other investors to contribute to this sexy/controversial love story/thriller. I thought if I looked toward the industry (S&M) that the story line is based perhaps I could find investors that weren’t afraid of such a controversial story line. Was wondering if you had any suggestions on how I might go about this? Thank you for your time.

Somewhere out there in the cyber-wilderness there must be venture capitalists who like S&M adventure. Or maybe there are some pain freaks looking for a tax shelter? (Of course, any experience with the IRS is more painful than the “alternative” play you might receive in a house of domination. Spank me, Lord, beat me with a whip, just please don’t audit me. Welts and bruises are nothing in comparison to the merciless scrutiny of the Man in the Blue Suit.)

At any rate, PervScan hasn’t read the script and thus can’t provide any particular endorsement of it. But the project does appear to have some momentum to it, so if you’d like to put your money where your mouth (or whatever organ) is, you can email Jennifer or visit littlemonkeyproductions.com.

One of the things that PervScan enjoys most about itself is its community of users. True, there are any number of idiots who post garbage comments to the site, but at the same time there is also an interesting and intelligent group of people who make PervScan their own. There are regulars, there are random perverts who stop by as the result of a Google search, sometimes there are “insiders” connected to various stories. All of it adds up to make the site a living, breathing Psychopathia Sexualis — a compendium of deviance in the here and now. In a certain sense, the site is a mirror of you, and you’re a strange but fascinating bunch.

But just how strange are you? This week PervScan received the following email:

I am conducting research into Necrophilia and would really like to hear from anybody who has actually engaged in the practice. You can email me at sas.bonser@atitproductions.com.

Many thanks

Though there are many people with a morbid bent, Goths acting out games of blood sacrifice and torture, “real” necrophiles are relatively far and few between. There’s a simple reason for this: in contemporary society, dead bodies are not easy to access — unless you happen to kill people, but then that’s such a high-risk maneuver for a mere sexual perversion that few people do it. But if there are any real necros out there in that fascinating group of people, the folks at At It Productions would like to hear from you.
