One-Legged Hooker Slain

“A one-legged hooker was killed in Brooklyn after a john hit her over the head, causing her to fall backwards out of her wheelchair and slam her skull against the wall, cops said yesterday. Elizabeth Acevedo, 38, was found lying unconscious on the floor of a hallway on the 13th floor of a building in the Wyckoff Gardens houses in Boerum Hill on Thursday morning. The handicapped hooker, who lived in the building, was taken to Long Island College Hospital, where she died yesterday morning after being removed from life support, police said. Acevedo — who lost her leg in a train accident — had a rap sheet with 67 arrests for prostitution and drug charges. She wore a prosthetic leg, but also used a wheelchair. Investigators believe she had been servicing a client in the hallway who then hit her on the head with a heavy object. Police were still looking for a suspect.” — New York Post (US)

Be honest. When first reading that the one-legged hooker was killed, did you find it funny at all? Did the picture of a deceased peg-leg whore tickle your funny bone?

The reality behind the news story is a sad one. The woman must have lived a hard life. “A relative” posting on another site spoke about how “Elizabeth choose [sic] to live that lifestyle.” But even if she chose to be a hooker, that doesn’t mean she deserved such an ignoble end — or to be laughed at. The blog Womanist Musings expanded on the point and wrote an impassioned analysis of the media reaction to Ms. Acevedo’s sad demise:

Only in a world where women are routinely devalued could the death of a prostitute be referred to as a joke. Had a white male been killed it certainly would not be a laughing matter because their bodies count.

It’s hard to deny that there is continued sexism against women. Would we be laughing if the victim were a white male? Odds are that if you turn the story around — “One-legged john bashed over head by hooker” — it will still be funny to anyone with a sense of black humor. Why? It has less to do with gender than with disability. It may not be moral or nice, but most folks (or at least those not afflicted with apotemnophilia) tend to view amputees as something less than the typical desideratum. To mix deformity with sexual desire seems absurd, and thus the media reaction has less to do with sexism than with ableism.

All that being said, just how gauche is it to laugh at the death of a one-legged hooker? Everyone will have to decide that for him- or herself. It is worth pointing out, however, that in a famous text called “On Murder Considered as One of the Fine Arts,” Thomas De Quincey argued that it is perfectly acceptable to consider homicide from an aesthetic vantage point — provided that the murder has already been committed. If there is no longer anything you can do to prevent the murder from occurring, it is fine (De Quincey asserted) to contemplate it from an aesthetic angle. And if that’s true, would it be acceptable to consider it from a comic angle as well? Is there such a thing as the funniest murder in history?

Evidently the limb was amputated via locomotive, meaning, of course, that the hooker-in-question had been stoned out of her gourd on something and passed out on some tracks, in which case I’ve no sympathy at all for her. On the other hand, I don’t find the death of a one-legged prostitute particularly humorous, either.

One time I read about a hooker that choked to death on a whole chicken drumstick…now that’s funny.

” meaning, of course, ” ?! Wow, that’s really some level of arrogance.

How about the perfectly equal possibility that it happened as a child. The disability leading to a spiral of depression and loss of self esteem, thus onto the ‘escape’ of drugs. Dependence and Prostitution.

What ever; It never struck me as amusing in the least, the thought of defenceless woman being beaten to death in some hallway. Regardless of background or social standing, it’s still bad.

She, and those she left behind, certainly do have my sympathy.

krovas has said it all, how sad that she had to suffer, and than have the injustice of insensitive people, make a joke out of her death, not only did she suffer in life but she became a pathetic joke after her end.
one-legged prostitute and drug addict or not, the death of a woman or anyone is never a laughing matter, especially if they have been a victim all their lives.
only the darwin awards or the horrible deaths of pedophiles is funny.

I agree with ladycara.

Sometimes human psychology means that people seek out humour where there isn’t any. One good example is death, which the vast majority of people cannot cope with, or are in denial about.

Laughing at her death might not be so much about her personal and individual situation as it is a way of coping with death generally.

Look folks, I’m just playing the odds. The train accident that took her leg appears to be a generally accepted fact. So does her rap sheet containing numerous drug-related offenses. It *might* have been some sort of wildly improbable misfortune while she was stone cold sober; anything is possible, but I generally disregard what is possible and focus on what is likely. It’s just seems silly not to put two and two together here.

I laughed. It’s funny that there are one legged hookers. That someone would pay for one.

When I realized that ’slain’ meant someone murdered her, it changed my perception. It’s still funny that there are one-legged hookers (Imagine a traditional whore, but with only one of those long black stockings and the other side of the garter hanging at her side, trying to seduce a man not into her bed or her street corner but her wheelchair – it’s funny), but murder isn’t so funny. Doesn’t mean the headline is any less amusing.

Okay, I’ll admit there’s a very thin veneer of humor to the concept of a one-legged hooker, but it vanishes instantly when you contemplate the details. She almost certainly lead a very miserable life, regardless of whether or not she was directly responsible for her own deformity. I’ve known call-girls who’s lives were as cushy and glamorous as anybody has a right to expect; prostitution in-and-of itself doesn’t (or shouldn’t) necessarily imply misery and hardship, but being drugged out street-meat almost always does, and a missing leg (and aren’t nice, long gams too often the sole measure of a woman?) could only amplify the pathos. But I don’t think I’ve answered anything for myself with this rigmarole. Where does that cruel little spark of humor come from when somebody mentions the phrase “one-legged hooker”?

well krovas i think it’s the image of a one legged wheel chair bound hooker in the first place that comes to mind when said topic is brought up.
i saw a middle aged woman, slightly over weight in a denim skirt, white crop top, overly orange hair, fag hanging out of one corner of her mouth, red lip stick and blue eyeshadow, sitting in a wheel chair with one leg hanging wearing one silver fuck me pump and had a giggle, still i feel sorry for her the way she died was not funny, just my image of her that was a little humor generating.
even then i felt a little bad for picturing her like that.

Jesus, you guys are really really ‘deep’. We’re all practically a bunch of sociologists, psychologists and therapists, so why don’t we write a book about a one-legged hooker’s life, and publish it through pervscan?

I can’t believe that in 2008, I am making comments on a site about sexually-related stories, talking about a one-legged hooker. I think I may have reached the peak of human existence.

Ok Boobsmans turn to chime in;

Actually I have heard there is a huge market for amputee hookers, well at least in the U.S.
