Should Psychiatric Hospital Patients Be Permitted To Have Sex?
“A Cuyahoga County court case involving a patient who had multiple sex partners at a psychiatric hospital highlights what one lawyer called ‘one of the most threatening issues’ facing mental health officials. Sexual hookups at mental hospitals are to some, a right, but to others, an outrage. Should sex be allowed? How do hospitals decide whether a mentally ill patient has the capacity to consent? How do they police against coerced sex? How do they provide for safe sex practices? It may be inevitable that patients engage in sexual relations, particularly in state hospitals where they may live for months or years. But it represents a clinical and legal minefield… The issue of sexual activity is so thorny that state hospitals are largely on their own to figure out policies. Rules about sex run the gamut. One group of state hospitals has a five-paragraph policy that simply discourages sex, while other state facilities spell out procedures on the distribution and disposal of condoms.” — The Plain Dealer (US)
This relatively lengthy article is well worth reading for its details on the way that various mental institutions cope with sex among the insane. Admittedly, there is a philosophical gray area in the whole issue. Here’s a thought experiment. Suppose a person suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder — multiple personalities, in lay terms. One personality may be slutty and “consent” to screw every crackpot in the ward. Another personality may be prudish and avoid sexual contact of any kind. If the slutty personality agrees to screw some lunatic, does that mean that the prudish personality is simultaneously being raped?
Such questions are definitely worth debating, even when they possess no clear-cut answers. However, the reality is that sex is a basic biological need. There wouldn’t be a debate about whether madmen need to eat or to sleep. Why should there be any debate about whether they need to fuck? Of course they need to. If mental institutions are going to turn their attention to the sexual behavior in their populations, they need to approach it as a thing to manage, not to repress. They could teach how to avoid pregnancy and disease. They could try to teach that sex, at its best, is a positive phenomenon that can draw depressives out of their shells and perhaps lunatics out of their lunacy. And if the resident psychotics and sociopaths can’t figure out that much, well, monitor their health, watch for abusive behavior, and don’t interfere if nobody complains.
Incidentally, two commenters on the original article proposed segregation — “The men in one building. The women in another.” — as a way to “solve” the problem. Clearly that’s misguided. It might protect women from some testosterone-mad men. But meanwhile it’s not going to suppress sex. It will simply encourage people to have gay sex. Just ask soldiers, prisoners, and the inhabitants of submarines.
Sorry to say, I disagree with the statement “Why should there be any debate about whether they need to fuck? Of course they need to.”
While there is the biological URGE to have sex, driven by the procreative impulse, this is not a NEED. A need implies that there will be a strong negative consequence if that need is not met. In this case, the negative consequence is that the person who isn’t getting any has a bad case of blue balls (for guys - called what for women?). This is as much a learned behavior as a physiological response. Going weeks, months or years without sex is not at all uncommon (unpleasant, perhaps…). Equating the need for sex with the need for food or sleep is outrageous.
When I was in the nut house the bastards just slung Bromide, or what ever, in the water. I was in and out a few times and noticed the pattern; Day before ye went in ye might have a raging hard on. That went by the board in there, and it wasn’t just the over the counter med’s they put ye on either.
I say that because, even when ye were off all meds and just being watched to see ye were safe to let out, still nothing. But home and drinking from ye own tap again? Cracking one off was first priority.
I think the sever ones shouldn’t but the people that are in there just for things like depression an such might actually cheer up after a nice ‘roll in the hay’ but encouraging it only leads to patients taking advantage of severe mental patients.
Only if the sex is anal.
being in a mental hospital is usually a last resort for most people, they have enough problems without, the ups and downs of sex and ensuing emotional turmoil it can cause, unless that person is doing the deed with an already established partner then it’s a very bad idea for them to go around having sex with the other patients, males and females are never allowed in the same bedrooms as each other and if it’s discovered that two or more are having sex while in the hospital they are kicked out pronto, and mental hospitals are full of gossip if two are getting it on it’s not very long before everyone knows that your doing it, it’s much safer to quietly satisfy yourself if the urge is that great privately then to have every other patient talking behind your back. i’ve been in the mental hospital i can assure you nothing goes unnoticed in a place like that, did i bonk any guys while in there….. no i didn’t , did i hear and see it happening yes i surely did.
ladycara, do you do anal?
never tried it….thats an out hole only, but all other holes are open why ?
@Dugman: Agree that, taking the assertion literally, it is overstating the case to equate sexual desire with hunger or the need to sleep. You’re clearly correct: a person can die from hunger or lack of sleep but not from celibacy.
However, the point remains that desire, like hunger, is a fundamental biological reality that isn’t going to be wished away. As LadyCara points out, people are having sex anyway. It’s practically impossible to be rid of it, and would it really be healthy to be rid of it anyway?
Hope your doing better ladycara.
thankx boobsman, i’m much better now it was a while ago, and supervert is right what ever they try to do to stop people having sex anywhere is just not going to work if they’re determined to do it, they just do it where they think no ones going to see them.
Laws and rules are meant to be tested. The whole “exit only” thing just makes me want to plough into your asshole anyway.
I find you very attractive, ladycara.
wow really… serious lol.(read sarcasm) at least your good for a laugh david benson.
just for you david…click on the name.
Seen it a thousand times. I want to be inside your asshole.
Would you two get a room for fuck’s sake?
how about this david……
I think you meant 2girls1cup (rather than cop), and yes I’ve seen those before.
I still want to perform anal sodomy on you.
i think not..your not getting near my rear….
lol, I prefer when it’s not consensual.
Sex with consent is no fun! Half the challenge is holding them down!
