Walk in a Punter, Walk out a Rapist
“Posters will appear in clubs and pubs from Monday warning men against paying for sex in brothels with exploited or trafficked women. The posters, which will be piloted in men’s toilets in Westminster and Nottingham, will say ‘Walk in a Punter. Walk out a Rapist‘. They are part of a six-month home office review into tackling the demand for prostitution, which began in January, and aim to point out that trafficked women are forced into selling sex, and that forced sex is rape. ‘So if you pay for sex with a trafficked woman what does that make you?’ the posters ask. ‘Trafficking is a vile and evil trade and sex buyers must be made to think twice about the consequences of their actions,’ home office minister Vernon Coaker said in statement. ‘These women are being treated as commodities and are sold, controlled and exploited by others for a profit. This is totally unacceptable.’ The posters will be supported by online advertising and additional advice on the UK Human Trafficking Centre’s Web site. The majority of men who pay for sex are aged between 20 and 40, peaking at 34 years, according to a 2007 report by the Child and Woman Abuse Studies Unit. Most are employed, about half are in a relationship and more than a fifth have children, it said.” — Reuters (UK)
Here is an image of the poster. (It’s safe for work, since in England it’s being displayed in public anyway.) It shows a seedy hotel with a door that says “model employment.” And we all know what those “models” do — serve “punters.” That’s British slang for john.
You have to admit that, on the part of law enforcement, this is a clever way to try to suppress demand for prostitutes. Their argument forms a perfect syllogism: rape is non-consensual sex; slaves don’t give consent; therefore to fuck a slave is to commit rape. The syllogism doesn’t really jive with practice, however. It’s not as though these women declare to their clients that they were forced into the business. Prostitutes typically misrepresent themselves anyway — they make up names, they dodge questions about their backgrounds, and so on. So if a prostitute smiles, takes money, and performs a service, how is the client supposed to know that she’s an indentured servant? Is he supposed to ask for proof of citizenship before purchasing from her a sexual service that is already illegal (but not quite as illegal as rape)?
It’s rather ridiculous. If the goal of this campaign is really to help the poor women forced into the flesh trade, it’s doomed to fail. Few punters get caught. Now a few of those few will face more severe punishments. It’s not going to have the least on impact the sex economy as a whole. If authorities really want to root out human slavery, they should legalize prostitution. This would enable them to hold brothels to the same standards regarding conscripted labor to which other businesses must adhere. It’s not just the behavior of johns that enables brothels to enslave women. It’s the prudery of everybody else.
I agree, I think it should be legalised. I’m happy to say I’ve never had to use a prostitute, but if I ever did I’d like to think that she’d actually chosen to do it for living rather then been forced into it.
I think alot of the information on sex slavery is false and greatly exaggerated aswell. Some of these european prostitutes that come over here were doing the exact same thing in the country they came from, in some cases to save up to get a ticket over to the UK!.
They then make much more money over here doing the exact same thing and not paying any tax. When they get caught they are hardly gonna turn round and say ‘yes officer, i came over of my own free will and stayed in the UK illegally and payed no tax etc’… They instead say ‘I was in the Ukraine a few months ago, walking to bible camp, when i got bashed over the head, when i woke up i was in London being forced to be a prostitute…. Please help me, i need a place to stay and free money and a visa and counseling etc’. Then they end up staying over here longer. If they say they were raped theres less chance of them being immediatly deported.
If the government legalised it and had inspectors, not only would they be no ’sex slaves’ but they’d also get a nice wad of tax money!
I sympathize with the plight of trafficked women, I really do, but legalizing prostitution would squeeze most of the fun out of it. A great deal of the enjoyment that comes from seeking out and having sex with a woman of negotiable virtue comes from the fact that it’s considered an illicit act. Forbidden grapes are always sweeter, you know. With “legalization” would inevitably come a whole parade of other unpleasant “ations”: homogenization, condomization, taxation, etc. Legalizing the world’s oldest profession would make it safe…and miserably, dreadfully dull.
chad (from Sunderland) raises some valid points, I have no doubt that many of these women are just plain lier’s or they significantly magnify there treatment in order to get more sympathy/ money out of it. I have no doubt that many of the girls are lured into the life by false-hood promises but its not nearly as bleak/ brutal as they make out.

lol rolls eyes.
Prostitutes down on Seafield Road in Edinburgh…yummy.
There are probably a whole sect of customer that totally gets off on the thought of raping women.
Like, they have a whole background fantasy of victimization and force.
The world is a scary place.
