“A Boulder mother who admitted she dropped her 8-year-old daughter off every Saturday for a year to spend the night with a 47-year-old man said authorities are ‘good-hearted, but misguided’ in charging her with child abuse. Lora Lee Hansen-Beard, 41, is charged with two misdemeanor counts of child abuse for placing the girl in a life- or health-threatening situation… Joseph Cardillo, 47, of Niwot, pleaded not guilty Friday to sex assault charges. He’s accused of using a sex toy on the child and drinking her urine… authorities were called to the girl’s school in October after teachers reported that she often showed up late, unfed and wearing dirty clothes. Teachers described the girl as emotionally fragile, and reported that she cried all the time and had no focus on school work. One teacher said that during a parent-teacher conference, Hansen-Beard said her daughter is a child of the sun and can’t get up when it’s dark. The mother also said the girl’s eyes get ‘close-up X-ray vision’ every night at midnight, allowing her to diagnose herself with sickle cell anemia, the warrant states. It says the girl told investigators she and Cardillo slept in the same bed together, usually naked, and would bathe together and use a hot tub in the nude. She said he caught her urine in cupped hands to drink it and once used a sex toy on her. Hansen-Beard said her daughter had told her about the nudity and urine-drinking incidents, according to the warrant, but she told deputies it wasn’t hurting anyone and she knows other people who drink urine. Hansen-Beard also said she asked her daughter if she was forced to do anything, and the girl said no, so Hansen-Beard had to respect that. Hansen-Beard told police she met Cardillo two years ago at a Hare Krishna meeting in Boulder. The psychology of the pedophile is simple enough to understand. He stumbled on a gravy train for his illicit lust. Most pedophiles have to contrive to satisfy themselves. It takes a certain sort of work to, say, grope a little girl: you have to hang out in the park, watch the behavior of the mothers, find a few minutes when you can isolate yourself with the child, convince her to touch you or whatever. It’s not easy. So when a pedo such as Mr. Cardillo manages to set himself up with regular Saturday night abuse dates, he must feel pretty damn lucky. There’s nothing hard to understand about that.

But what about the mother? However disturbing you may find pedophiliac behavior, it is even more disturbing to contemplate parents who actively help pedophiles molest their children. What could the mother have been thinking? How could she “have to respect” her daughter’s stated compliance when the guy was taking nude baths with her and drinking the little thing’s urine? Look, some people drink urine for health purposes or whatever. But when a guy is drinking a prepubescent’s pee, there’s no respectable reason for it. He’s a creep, plain and simple.

Curiously, there is no mention that Mr. Cardillo was paying for the privilege of these weekly pedo dates, yet he must have been paying the mother to pimp out her daughter. Otherwise it only gets weirder and more inscrutable. Clearly Ms. Hansen-Beard has a screw loose (hence the belief in “x-ray vision” and so forth). Could she be so screwy as to think that this was not the cause but the cure for her daughter’s fragile emotional state? Men will sometimes remark crassly of a woman that “all she needs is to have a good fuck tossed into her,” but would a parent ever think the same of her child?

It is difficult to fathom, but at the same time you have to keep the larger numbers in mind. The current world population is something like 6,786,886,004. Within such a large number there are bound to be mutations — parents who turn against children, people who turn against themselves, humans who turn against humanity. Maybe there is nothing more to understand about Ms. Hansen-Beard other than that she’s a mutation — and that it must be awful to have a mutation for a mother.
