Man Had A Fetish For Teeth
“A stalker with a teeth fetish who took pictures of women’s mouths has been given three years’ probation. Eric White, 42, pretending to work for a dental magazine, approached his victims in the street and asked to take pictures of their teeth and tongues. White, of Burnblea Gardens, Hamilton, then began a harassment campaign towards his victims, following them home from shopping centres and begging for their phone numbers… White, who works in promotions, targeted a woman in Bellshill, in October 2004. He told her he worked for a dental magazine, then took out a camera and took five pictures of her. He told her she had a ‘very sexy mouth’ and ‘a beautiful tongue’. Almost a year later, White spotted the woman out shopping and followed her home. She reported him to police. White approached another woman in Edinburgh, in July last year. A month later White appeared as she was out shopping. He then arrived at her home in November of last year and asked to be let into her house, but the woman refused and called the police.” — Evening Times (UK)
Only one news outlet carried a photo of the teeth fetishist. Ironically, Mr. White was clad in black, and his own teeth were carefully hidden behind a turtleneck or scarf.
Perhaps it’s symptomatic. Nowadays many fetishes are the focal points for micro-communities, but it doesn’t appear to be the case with teeth. There are porn sites centering on braces, such as the elegant BeautyAndBraces.com, but most of these cater less to teeth fetishists than to pedophile types who understand the word braces to mean adolescent. Evidently the fetish for teeth — odontophilia — is less common than you might think. In a fascinating study seeking to estimate the relatively frequency of various fetishes, researchers found that only two percent admitted to odontophilia. Compare that to the 47% who admitted to foot fetishes and you’ll see that, in the hierarchy of obsessions, teeth hardly rank.
That may help to explain why Mr. White was compelled to take his fetish to the streets. Of course, there must be a dozen different factors that contributed to his behavior. One doesn’t become a stalker for lack of web forums. In The Interpretation of Dreams, Freud portrayed “the dream of dental irritation as a dream of masturbation,” equating tooth extractions with self-pleasure.
It is also a case of such transference when the genitals are replaced by the face in the symbolism of unconscious thought. This is assisted by the fact that the buttocks resemble the cheeks, and also by the usage of language which calls the nymphae “lips,” as resembling those that enclose the opening of the mouth. The nose is compared to the penis in numerous allusions, and in one place as in the other the presence of hair completes the resemblance. Only one part of the anatomy — the teeth — are beyond all possibility of being compared with anything, and it is just this coincidence of agreement and disagreement which makes the teeth suitable for representation under pressure of sexual repression.
Cheeks of the face and ass, mouth and vagina, nose and penis — if teeth are the one part of the human anatomy that do not have an analogue in the pants, does that explain why odontophilia is relatively rare? If so, Freud would interpret it to mean that the odontophile harbors a sexual neurosis — a diagnosis repeated to Mr. White by the court, who told him “it seems there is some underlying problem in your mind about your relationship with women.” But what if, rather than interpreting it negatively, you interpret it postively? What if a tooth fetish indicates not a fear of sex but a desire for something else? After all, sexual urges need not exclude themselves to ass, cunt, and cock. Perhaps teeth, with their sharp edges and hard surfaces, point the way to a sexuality that is no longer about touch, sensitivity, response, or even humanity. Perhaps they form a sort of shoreline where the human body edges into the inorganic and fetishism leaves subjectivity behind for its proper domain: the realm of objects.
Edgar Allen Poe had an extracurricular interest in teeth. It came up in a few of his stories, anyway. One of his characters was particularly fascinated because that was the only part of the skull that you can see all the time, and then he proceeded to starve his wife in order to make her look more like a skeleton. Or something. It was hot. You should check it out.
It’s true that this is under the “Fetish” category, but I would put it also under the “Oral” category as teeth are part of the mouth. Maybe to this fetishist, teeth represented an extention of the oral cavity to be fetishized. Maybe his fascination with teeth comes from a subconsious desire to complete his oral stage of his childhood. I heard the oral stage, when not complete, in a college psychology class, manifests itself in either one of two stages as an adult. There is the passive oral fixation, in which a person is dependant on others to take care of him or her, and just waits for things to be handed to him or her, which comes from having been fixated on sucking activities in one’s youth. There is the aggressive oral fixation, which manifests itself in the desire to “chew someone out”, or get someone in trouble. This omees from having been fixated on the biting oral fixation in one’s youth. I think this is a pretty interesting fetish to explore.
I think our fetishist friend here, was obcessed with teeth because he saw them as sexy. He saw them as part of an orifice or the oral cavity that closes down on something, and he thought that was pretty erotic, like a vagina closing on a penis. He saw some eroticism in the fact that teeth were present, as a continuum of oral fixation.
