10 Witness Rape, Do Nothing

“A security video from an apartment hallway shows at least 10 witnesses ignored a woman’s cries for help for more than an hour as a man beat and sexually assaulted her, prosecutors in Minnesota said. The surveillance video clearly showed men and women looking out their apartment doors or starting to walk down the hallway before retreating as the woman was assaulted for nearly 90 minutes, police spokesman Tom Walsh said. Police said they responded to a call of drunken behavior and found Somali immigrant Rage Ibrahim, 25, and a woman lying unconscious in the hallway early Tuesday. The woman’s clothing had been pulled up and she had fresh scratches on her face and blood on her thigh, according to the criminal complaint. Ibrahim says he is innocent and that the incident was a misunderstanding… police were shocked by the behavior of the bystanders. ‘(The video) shows one person looking out of her door probably three times,’ Walsh said. ‘It shows another person walking up, observing what’s going on, then turning and putting up the hood of his sweatshirt.’ At one point, the 26-year-old woman knocked on a door, yelling for the occupants to call police. A man inside that apartment told police he did not open the door or look out, but said he did call police — although they have no record of his call, according to court documents.” — WTOL (US)

At first glance, this appears to be yet another instance of the well-known Bystander Effect. This is a psychological phenomenon in which an individual is more likely than a group to intervene in a crime or crisis. An individual can’t shirk responsibility for his fellow man, but in a group the psychology changes: everyone points a finger at everyone else and can therefore rationalize non-involvement. The weird thing about this story, though, is that the bystanders were less a group than a series of individuals who witnessed the crime. This makes it more difficult to understand their lack of intervention. Is it because they were a group not in space but in time?

This ratio — more people, less intervention — makes you wonder if it could ever reach a crazy point where intervention not only becomes less likely but flips around like a malfunctioning compass to its polar opposite. If one person witnesses a rape, he tries to help the victim. If ten people witness a rape, they presume somebody will help. If a hundred or a thousand people witness a rape, what are the odds that one will join in? “Hey,” the guy says to himself. “Free sex. What are the odds I’ll get caught? Far from being witnesses, these masses of people are the crowd into which I can disappear. Why not? If I start the gang bang, maybe others will join in…”

Maybe that’s how bukkake originated.

these people might have been afraid to help or more likely just didn’t give a sh*t .
in the general public i have noticed a deep social apathy, an example would be the old man who fell over in front of me grazing his hands and knees i was the only one who stopped to help other people in the street just kept walking by including stepping over and around his shopping bags the least these people could have done was help me gather up his shopping and help him get up off the footpath, instead i had to struggle to get him up on his feet and im a small built woman and the guy was heavy set, what gets me is all the men who just walked past happy that 53 kg 158 cm tall woman was struggling to pick up a heavy set 70 something man one of them was so bold as to ask me to move whilst i was doing all of this so he could get past and keep on his merry way, when people are happy to keep on walking by, when you keep your seat on a full bus instead of giving up your seat to a heavily pregnant women or disabled person then you yourself are participating in the social apathy, when politcians and religious leaders talk about morality crumbling they should first start by letting people know that it is the small actions of a great many people all lumped into an attitude of ” i don’t give a sh*t/i don’t have the time/ i’m late for a meeting/ i’m not getting involved/ i’m glad thats not me/ if i ignore it (insert situation here) then it will go away.” is just not acceptable.
then society it self needs to learn again kindness to those in need unlike that guy in his early 20’s in his nice suit who asked me whilst i was struggling with that old man and his scattered shopping bags if i could please excuse myself so he could get past and keep walking by because obviously it was to much trouble to even offer to assist for five seconds and pick up those shopping bags, like i said in the begining of this really long post most people these days esspecially people of my age bracket that’s 18 to 30 year olds just don’t give a sh*t, we’ve had it so good that we must be one of the most self centered, over indulged and spoilt set of humanbeings to have ever walked the earth.

We’re all on our own in life. All we can count on is ourselves.

i only help when i feel i’m able to. solving world hunger, striving for world peace or giving all my money that i need to survive on to charity is not my goal in life so yes if looking after number one means not going without some of lifes pleasures instead of giving $ 80 dollars a month to some charity who feeds the starving in a 3rd world country than yes i do make sure i take care of myself and my security before thinking of giving to organisations or a homeless person who will not be spending whatever i might give on food.
i tried to make a point of saying that it’s the small actions of a lot of people that build up that lead to what happened in the above article. i’m selective in what i do and for whom, i take care myself first, than my family, then my friends, thats still not going to stop me from giving my seat up on a full bus to someone else who is old, disabled, heavily pregnant. i wouldn’t get involved in a drunken brawl or domestic disput myself still i have and will continue into the future call the police to do what they are paid to do.

I agree with you. Ladycara, it’s true that society is so apathetic sometimes. I myself somethimes say to myself “nobody cares!” when I feel, in general, frustrated about something. Unfortunately, sometimes I feel apathetic, because I feel “Oh good, it’s (insert choice of misfortune) is not me!” At least, though, I would give my seat to a person I felf deserved it. I also, now usually don’t give money to homeless people, but if they really seem like they are genuinely down on their luck and trying to better themselves, or have children, I give something.

I have encountered a situation where I have encountered apathy, big time! I was coming home late at night, and carrying some expensive piece of equipment in a suit case that belonged to an environmental firm I was working with, my bookbag, and a roll on suitcase. I was struggling to get out of the subway, so I could get to my company’s office and download the readings I took with this equipment on a computer, and later go home and take a shower. Anyway, I was struggling to get all these things together, and at least a couple of people saw me do this, and neither of them offered to help me! I wanted to say “a little help here!” Some people can be total assholes! Anyway, you are right, if we all do a little, a lot can be done!
