“An Australian woman was killed by a pet camel given to her as a 60th birthday present after the animal apparently tried to have sex, police said Sunday. The woman, whose name was not released, was killed Saturday at her family’s sheep and cattle ranch near Mitchell, 350 miles west of the Queensland state capital Brisbane, state police Detective Senior Constable Craig Gregory said. The 10-month-old male camel — weighing about 330 pounds — knocked the woman to the ground, lay on top of her, then exhibited what police suspect was mating behavior, Gregory said. ‘I’d say it’s probably been playing, or it may be even a sexual sort of thing,’ Gregory said, adding the camel almost suffocated the family’s pet goat by straddling it on several occasions. Camel expert Chris Hill said he had no doubt the camel’s behavior was sexual. Hill, who has offered camel rides to tourists for 20 years, said young camels are not aggressive, but can be dangerous if treated as pets without discipline. The fate of the camel was not known. Here is a picture of the lady apparently killed by the randy camel. You wouldn’t mistake her for a female camel unless you were a rutting young male camel living in captivity with no other outlet for your sexual desires. To be clear, police are still trying to determine whether the camel really killed her or whether she died of heart failure. It might be less embarrassing for the lady’s family if she weren’t humped to death by an animal, but it might be more embarrassing for the camel. If she died of heart failure, did the camel hump her already dead body? Jesus, some camels got no shame.

Then again, people seem to have no shame either. It is difficult to say which is more disturbing — the story or the fact that the story appeared on the “most popular” list of many different news sites. What is it about the image of a husband finding his wife’s dead body — “with clear hoof prints on her face and arm” — that so titillates the average person? Is everybody really so sick? Probably it is the sheer novelty of the story that explains its appeal. Like the popular story about the horse that fucked a man to death, this camel incident breaks up the dull sameness of most news stories: war, politics, weather, blah blah blah. Yes, yes, you know that some speech about global warming is more important, you know you should care about ethnic slaughter in distant lands, but damn, a camel humping a lady to death — that’s something else. When the news becomes white noise, a genuine novelty rises up like a shriek. It’s almost inspirational. The world may be awful and violent, but at least it remains able to surprise.
