“An Ohio man is under arrest for revealing a bizarre sexual plot to an undercover investigator online, then flying to Miami, according to Florida’s attorney general. Investigators said Jeff Doland, of Uniontown, Ohio, was arrested on felony charges that he approached an undercover agent online and offered to pay to act out his sexual perversions with children, said Attorney General Bill McCollum. Doland was arrested by authorities after he flew to Miami to meet a mother of two girls. Doland told the woman he would pay the woman $550 to ‘forcibly submerge the children, ages 9 and 12 years old, under water until they became unconsciousness, then raising the person out of the water.’ During multiple internet conversations, Doland told the woman, an undercover agent with the United States Secret Service, that ‘dunking’ was his particular form of sexual gratification. ‘The allegations made during the course of this investigation are so heinous they are almost outside the realm of comprehension. Without law enforcement intervention, real children could have been in grave danger,’ said McCollum. McCollum said Doland claimed he ‘liked watching the bubbles’ and went on to send the undercover agent explicit images of child torture as examples of what he proposed to do to the two young children, including a detailed explanation of how he planned to bind the young girls to the bottom of the pool of water. Here is a picture of Mr. Doland. He is not a particularly scary-looking guy. In fact, he rather looks like what his “normal” life suggested: a technologist who worked for the school district (ahem), was married, had two teenage stepchildren, a suburban house with a backyard pool (ahem). Neighbors described him as a decent guy, the sort who would play ball in the yard with his stepson. His ex-wife claimed that he “he showed no signs of what he is accused of doing.” This has the ring of truth: a woman is not usually kind when describing her ex. So far as the people who knew him were concerned, this extremely deviant fetish came out of nowhere. Perhaps that only points to a ratio that characterizes perversity in general: the weirder the kink, the more deeply hidden it usually is.

Clearly Mr. Doland was exploring the possibilities of his dunking fetish online. Dunking is sometimes featured on bondage sites, and the revelation that Doland wanted to put choke collars on the girls suggests he saw dunking as an extension of bondage. While communicating with the secret service agent whom he thought would sell her children (for a mere $500!), he used the screen name Dunkingstool — a torture device he may well have learned about while cruising around the net for dunking information. There even used to be a web site called dunkingstool.com. It’s offline now and doesn’t appear to have anything to do with Mr. Doland, but you can still see a bit of it (like this picture) at archive.org.

One of the dangers of a site like PervScan is that it tends to glamorize perversion. When you read about a repugnant case such as this, however, you recognize that there is a tremendous difference between “perversion” — the consensual games that alt.sex.fiends like to play — and perversion. In fact, when you contemplate the prospect of Mr. Doland getting his rocks off to the little bubbles of drowned children, you realize that his perversion is so extreme that it’s not even a perversion anymore. It’s a psychopathology. In a way you hate to admit this: it opens up the prospect of the guy playing the victim and doing easy time in a psych ward somewhere. But on the other hand, what else can you call his kink but a sickness? It certainly isn’t glamorous.
