Crying Over Spilled Semen

“The finding that women who do not use condoms during sex are less depressed and less likely to attempt suicide than are women who have sex with condoms and women who are not sexually active, leads one researcher to conclude that semen contains powerful — and potentially addictive — mood-altering chemicals. Study author Gordon G. Gallup, Ph.D., a psychologist at the State University of New York in Albany, also found that women who routinely had intercourse without condoms became increasingly depressed as more time elapsed since their last sexual encounter. There was no such correlation for women whose partners regularly used condoms. Gallup’s survey of 293 college women also found that those who did not use condoms were most likely to initiate sex and to seek out new partners as soon as a relationship ended. ‘These women are more vulnerable to the rebound effect, which suggests that there is a chemical dependency,’ says Gallup. Semen contains hormones including testosterone, estrogen, prolactin, luteinizing hormone and prostaglandins, and some of these are absorbed through the walls of the vagina and are known to elevate mood.” — Psychology Today (US)

“Survival of the fittest” is a harsh principle that has little tolerance for the depressed or suicidal. From an evolutionary standpoint, it only makes sense that the chemistry of seminal fluid should make women more content somehow. You’re more likely to perpetuate the species if, every time you fuck, you get a semen high. (Anecdotal evidence suggests that semen makes men happy too — in their case, not absorbing but expelling it.)

Aside from the obvious points for research that will soon have chemists ejaculating on their own slides, this study raises some interesting questions. Does a woman get a semen high only from human ejaculate? What if she likes horse cum — would that give her a rush too? And must she absorb it through the vagina? Are the effects the same if she drinks it? Or what if a man swallows the sperm of another man? Or swallows his own sperm? Would that fill him with feelings of well-being? Perhaps it would, so long as he hadn’t noticed the recent controversial story about a correlation between oral sex and throat cancer. (SF Gate tried to debunk this correlation. Its points were reasonable but not entirely convincing.)

At any rate, if it ends up being true that semen makes women happy, it certainly ought to cut into the booming market for prescription anti-depressants — at least until STDs and unwanted pregnancies counteract the effects of the semen high.

…or it could just be that women who are more likely to rapidly seek out new partners are also more likely to not use condoms…? Correlation does not equal causation. That is the first thing that you learn in just about any statistics or scientific-method class.

to true i think a women with less concern for her welfare will not only seek out multiple partners but not use condoms as well it all goes to her sense of low self esteem she wants the praise and momentary acceptance that sex with a stranger might give her so when Mr clap infected guy says it would deepen the experience to not use protection she will go along with it. this shows that a man must have done this study because only a man would surgest that not using a condom with random unknown partners is a good idea . its just asking for an STD then if the women is not on the pill then she could end up with AIDS and an AIDS baby.

So is it the sperm, or the seminal fluid? I think it’s a not unimportant point for those of us who’ve had ourselves fixed.
