“An inmate was jailed as a man for more than a week on a statutory rape charge before a shower revealed the prisoner was a woman. Alexander David Cross, also known as Elaine Ann Cross, had been in the Hamilton County Jail awaiting a court appearance Wednesday. Cross pleaded guilty to the charge in a deal with prosecutors. The charge stems from an alleged sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl. Prosecutors allege Cross, 42, and the teenager had sexual contact at least three times during June and July 2006. Officials said Cross’ gender was revealed when jail authorities forced the inmate to take a shower. ‘After about 10 day in jail, they figure out Alex Cross is a female,’ prosecutor Boyd Patterson said in court.” — Yahoo (US)

Unfortunately there do not appear to be any pictures of Mr/Ms Cross online. It would have been enlightening to see just how male s/he looked. At any rate, other accounts of the incident did offer further details. Apparently the 15-year-old victim was as surprised as the police by Cross’ gender, which will tell you something about how convincing s/he was. Evidently Cross had performed oral sex on the girl without requiring the same. (This lack of reciprocity is often a warning sign. You don’t get head for free, kids.) And the girl’s father was “mad as a hornet” about the whole thing, though you would think he might have been relieved to discover his daughter’s lover was a woman and not a man. At least she couldn’t get knocked up.

There are a few different ways you can view the story. It might seem bizarre insofar as the police failed to determine Cross’ gender, though her driver’s license listed her as a male and she must have had a masculine appearance. It might seem perverse insofar as this woman imitated a man in order to seduce a young girl into a lesbian relationship. Or it might just seem sad insofar as Cross might have been deeply unhappy with her “given” gender. Did anyone suffering from Gender Identity Disorder ever have a more cruelly ironic name than Cross, with all its hints of cross-dressing and cross-sex relationships? And even more ironic was that, when her “true” gender was discovered, police placed Cross in “female isolation,” thus condemning her in body to a state in which she’d already been long condemned in her own mind.
