Unclear on the Concept

“The school system in Hagerstown, Md., issued a written reprimand in December to the parents of a 5-year-old kindergarten boy who had pinched a classmate’s buttocks, terming his behavior ’sexual’ harassment. Said his dad: ‘He knows nothing about sex. There’s no way to explain (to him) what he’s been written up for.’ Also in December, the principal of a preschool in Bellmead, Texas, issued an in-school suspension to a 4-year-old boy after he hugged his female teacher’s aide with his face in her chest, which was termed ’sexual contact and/or sexual harassment’ (though following complaints, the offense was changed to ‘inappropriate physical behavior’).” — The Telegraph (US)

The French poète maudit Arthur Rimbaud once wrote a scandalous verse about seven-year-old poets. Maybe a new bard will come along to tell of four- and five-year-old sex offenders. In Maryland, where the age of consent is sixteen, authorities must figure that dirty old men get in their chops early as dirty little schoolboys. Sure, dad, your little fella “knows nothing” about sex. Why, it’s plain as day to his teachers that the kindergartener is a serial groper on the rise.

Seriously, you have to wonder about people sometimes — hysterical people. Grandparents go around pinching their grandkids on the bum — innocently, for fun, without weird or pervy intent, for the simple reason that that’s what some grandparents do — and then when the kid does the same to a classmate he’s put on the elementary school sex offender registry. It may be true that children are learning about sexuality at increasingly younger ages. It may even be true that the kid knew exactly what he was doing and thought his chum had a great ass. But still, a little kid who pinches the butt of another kid is just being a little kid. It doesn’t sound like he has a “problem” of any sort. What do they think the little guy is going to do, pinch a butt this week and go for anal on the playground next week?

This is just ridiculous! Children that young are too innocent to ever be convicted of sexual harassment. ‘Inappropriate physical contact’ perhaps, cause they do need to learn what normal people will accept and not. But whoever was so ‘perverted’(I realise use the term loosely on a site such as this) to think children would be focussed on sex at that age. Though even if they knew the innuendo linked with their behaviour, what’s the big deal? It’s like porn: when you’re old enough to want it, you’re old enough to have it.

It’s not the mischevious kids that concern me, but the adults in these situations who seem to find inappropriate sexual behavior in children’s behavior. It’s a reflection of their perceptions and concepts…..children aren’t any different now than when I went to school…it’s the times and the teachers that have changed. Sounds like these “administrators” of our children’s learning need some basic training in child psychology.

I totally agree with Halene Pamabog, and intothewind; kids are kids! Before the ages of thirteen, or eleven in some, kids are too innocent to know or internalize implications of any sexual behavior! It’s the stupid lawmakers and administrators, that are the problem! The kid should not have pinched the other kid’s but because the butt is a sensitive and private area, and it’s not nice to pinch just anyone’s butt, especially if done painfully, but he kid is not a pervert!
