“A Thai spa has agreed to re-model its penis-shaped fence into lotus flowers after it offended neighbours, a government official said on Monday. The Sappaya Spa, located near the entrance of a small village and near a beach on the southern tourist island of Phuket, upset locals this month when builders erected the 18 Hindu Shiva Lingas around the property. ‘People can’t stand them so they called us for help,’ Thawichart Intararit, chief of Phuket’s culture office, told Reuters. After weeks of negotiations, the spa owner, a staunch Hindu follower, bowed to the outcry over the sculptures, which he thought would bring him good luck in business. ‘He promised to have workers use cement to re-shape them into lotus flowers from Monday,’ Thawichart said. Shiva Linga is the holy symbol of Lord Shiva, which religious scholars have given various interpretations of, including the symbol of copulation. PervScan was unable to find a picture of the offensive fence. It’s peculiar because if you search Google Images for “shiva linga,” the images you get are only vaguely phallic. According to Wikipedia, some variants of Hinduism don’t even “elaborate on this interpretation” of the lingam as a phallic symbol. Given that Hindu symbols are not uncommon in Thailand, you’d think that the locals would be able to tolerate a lingam or twelve. That they couldn’t suggests that the phallic fence must have exaggerated the penile quality (the penility?) of the symbol. Why else the tempest in a teapot?

If the fence really did resemble a row of dildos on sticks, you can understand why the locals might feel ambivalent. Home owners often object to having any sort of sex business in their neighborhood, so surely the same feelings would be at play with a dildo fence. Conversely, the maxim “one man’s pain is another man’s pleasure” might be at play too. Where some might see a blight on the neighborhood, others might see a new sexual opportunity. Is that what you had in mind when you thought the fence was inviting, Cat? A row of humans seated atop a row of dildos might give a whole new meaning to the phrase “on the fence.”
