“A charter school alerted authorities to a 29-year-old sex offender who tried to enroll there, pretending he was just 12, in what sheriff’s officials said Friday may have been an attempt to lure children into sexual abuse. The Yavapai County sheriff’s office also said Neil Havens Rodreick II conned two men he was living with and having sex with into believing he was a young boy. One of them, 61-year-old Lonnie Stiffler, called himself Rodreick’s grandfather when he tried to enroll him at Mingus Springs Charter School as ‘Casey Price.’ ‘This is the weirdest case I’ve seen in 18 years,’ sheriff’s spokeswoman Susan Quayle said. ‘If it wasn’t so sad it would be funny…’ Officials at the charter school in Chino Valley, about 90 miles northwest of Phoenix, told deputies that papers the ‘grandfather’ presented appeared to be fake and that ‘boy’ looked much older than 12. Stiffler and Robert James Snow, 43, ‘were very upset when the detectives told them they had been having a sexual relationship with a 29-year-old man and not a pre-teen boy,’ Quayle said. Detectives have evidence that Stiffler and Snow enrolled Rodreick in other Arizona schools, and have notified law enforcement in those jurisdictions, Quayle said. It was unclear whether Rodreick had actually attended any schools, but Quayle said, ‘I think what we’re looking at is that he’s being used to troll for other kids.’” — Yahoo (US)

Here is a picture of Mr. Rodreick. He does look youthful, but it’s hard to imagine that someone could really believe he’s twelve years old. Here is a picture of his “grandfather,” Mr. Stiffler. Here’s a picture of his other live-in “uncle,” Mr. Snow. Supposedly this is Mr. Snow’s MySpace page. It’s nothing remarkable. He has four friends, no blog, and says of children: “love kids, but not for me.”

The obvious thing to say is that it’s difficult to imagine how any adult could think he’d get away with this pedo charade. Then again, Mr. Rodreick seems to have tricked the two pederasts with whom he was living. If he can fool adult men who share his living space and see him naked, then why — or so he must have said to himself — why couldn’t he fool a school registrar? It’s worth noting that, amazingly enough, he did manage to register at a few other schools. It’s not clear he attended any classes though. Maybe he registered by mail.

Mr. Rodreick may have been brazen, but he wasn’t as dumb as his adult boyfriends. Not only did they fall for his ruse — wishful thinking, perhaps? — but, when informed that their butt boy was really twenty-nine, they were indignant. Now that’s brilliant. There you are being interrogated by the police, and they inform you that the “twelve-year-old” you’ve been “molesting” is in fact a twenty-nine-year-old fraudster. What’s the dumb thing to say? “Oh no, that’s terrible, I only want to sodomize little boys!” What’s the smart thing to say? “Of course he’s twenty-nine. I knew that. What do you think I am, a child molestor?” It was so stupid to incriminate themselves that it half makes you wonder if they really love Mr. Rodreick. Maybe they want to go to prison in the hopes they can still be with him?
