Obviously that leaves the whole case as a he-said she-said. Whom will the jury believe — the hooker or the cop? To a casual observer, both seem pretty credible. Mr. Ward has been a model officer and Ms. Pane is an educated woman from a tight-knit Italian family. Just because she worked as a dominatrix doesn’t make her a liar.

Perhaps the interesting thing about the whole story is that, regardless of who did what and why, it shotguns this image into the mass media: dominatrix shitting on cop. Normal folks who sit at their breakfast table reading sports scores and playing sudoku suddenly have this grotesque image forced through their heads. They become aware of an entire world of subterranean activity, a market of sex, shit, drugs, money, favors. When they go to the bathroom, they wonder if they could defecate on another person. When they have sex, they wonder if there is some mysterious way in which excrement can enhance sexual pleasure. Maybe some are repulsed by the thoughts, maybe others intrigued, and these latter fall prey to the strange logic whereby crime can become propaganda for more crime.
