Chinese Farmer Gets Free Sex-Change Operation
“A 50-year-old Chinese farmer has undergone the first stage of a free sex-change operation in a hospital in Shenyang, capital of northeast China’s Liaoning Province. The farmer, who was not identified, is from Damintun Town and has been married for more than 20 years. He had two hours of facial surgery at the Xinglin cosmetic hospital yesterday morning. ‘This is his first operation. We adjusted the outline of his face to make it more tender and beautiful like a woman’s,’ said Liu Jianbo, the chief surgeon… [The man's wife] said she had often quarreled with Chen about his sexual indifference toward her, several years after they got married. The farmer finally told his wife that his only wish was to become a woman. ‘He often told me that his life would be meaningless if he could not become a woman,’ his wife said. ‘He even attempted to commit suicide several times.’ His younger daughter fully supported her father’s dream and took him to many hospitals for sex-change operation consultations. But they were forced to abandon the plan because of the high operation fees, his wife said. Eventually, the Xinglin hospital decided to offer the operation free of charge after taking the man’s financial constraints into account. Next month, the farmer will receive further surgery in a process that will last for six months, Liu said.” — China Daily (China)
On the surface this is a run-of-the-mill story. Its most notable features are the medical establishment’s beneficence (i.e. offering the surgery pro bono) and the man’s age and occupation (not a lot of old farmers want a face that’s “tender and beautiful like a woman’s”).
But then if you take a deeper look into it, something very strange emerges. Since the 1970s China has been struggling to control overpopulation. Its most notorious tactic has been the implementation of a one-baby policy whose unfortunate side effect has been to lessen the perceived value of baby girls. Boys are thought to be more useful and therefore girls are sometimes abandoned or even murdered.
Place this sex-change story against its cultural background and suddenly you see how weird it is. Chinese don’t want baby girls but the medical establishment helps a man to become a woman? On a societal level this is difficult to understand. And on an individual level it points to even weirder impulses: aside from his gender confusion, does the farmer want to be less useful? Does his sex change form a solitary rebellion against the responsibilities forced on Chinese men? Does it somehow atone for murdered daughters by obliging a man to take on the role of a woman?
wow, i bet it would only cost about £80,000 to make a documentry on this, and you’d rake in about £1million world wide,. Someone lend me £80,000 please
if i had the money i’d give it to you because i’m sure it would make more world wide then just 1 million, only problem i doubt china would let forign cameras into their badly maintained hospitals it’s bad for publisity you know.
Perhaps on a sociological level the logic is that as a woman this man in particular won’t be able to procreate.
Naturally born baby girls lead to more citizens able to make more baby girls.
Not that I condone their “Femi-cide”(I know this term applies to Women not female babies being killed simply based on their gender but I think the term could be expanded to encompass this particular issue) it does seems one small move (very small I admit) to help control their population. Perhaps China is making an attempt to eliminate an tactic that makes them appear a cold heartless race of people.
Maybe I am just attempting to understand why a culture on a whole would have such an odd practice in the first place. The killing of baby girls I mean. As a woman I find it frightening of course. I we’re Chinese I may not have lived long enough to even contemplate how it would affect me as a person.
wow… If you can past my over-punctuation I make relatively valid point.
On a total sidenote- Pervscan is good for my Brain. If Supervert made a Tshirt that just had his name on it … in a nifty font of course … I would wear it proudly over my well shaped completely natural breasts.
it makes sense in the scheme of overpopulation. The guy won’t be able to reproduce anymore, effectively removing 1 person from the list of people who could contribute to the problem.
T-shirts — it’s been on the to-do list for a long time… But thanks for the affirmation that you’d really wear one. We’d hate to go through the trouble of designing them and then have them end up in people’s rag bags…
T-shirts! Great idea! Here’s one for Chen’s wife:
“My husband got a sex-change operation and all I got was this crappy T-shirt.”
