“Inspired by a foreign news report he had read, a 42-year-old Hong Kong businessman went online and posted an invitation to like-minded men to take part in impromptu gang rapes. The message, which was posted on the Gossip section of she.com’s message board last year, drew more than 100 responses within days… In the first prosecution of its kind, Johnny Chan Sek-ming pleaded not guilty yesterday to two charges of outraging public decency, and two other charges of using a computer with intent to commit an offence. The married man who runs a restaurant in Hong Kong admitted to being the author of the offending postings, but claimed they were ‘merely a joke’. It all started on 13 Aug last year when Chan read a news report connecting a string of rapes in the UK to the notorious South African crime known as jack rolling. Jack rolling refers to the recreational abduction and gang rape of women. Inspired, Chan went online and invited people to team up for a ‘Flash Mob Rape’… ‘Flash mob rape is formed by 5 to 6 boys, specifically intercepting single females,’ he wrote, using the nickname MasterMind. ‘Each time, one of the gang (members) will rape the female from behind and others will render assistance and act as lookouts. Then we will have her mouth gagged and hands tied before flashing (leaving) together. That’ll be great! This modus operandi has its origin in South Africa, now (it has) spread to the UK. You can easily imagine him following the latest trends in technology — or perhaps even being a trendsetter himself, since he seems to have been the first to conceive of flash mob rape. (Google the phrase and the only hits you get refer to this case.)

Even if you think that rape is disgusting and evil, it’s hard not to admit that there is something thrillingly new about the concept of flash mob rape. Sexual assault may be repellent, but the concept here is sexy. It utilizes the latest technology to invent a new form of deviance, or perhaps a new variant of an old form.

Yes, gang rape has existed since the moment that there were enough men to form a gang. But in the past, gang rape has been a matter of circumstance and opportunity — some guys happen to be hanging out (ie drinking) in a basement, somebody brings over a chick, and before you know it she’s getting assaulted on a foosball table. Or in another common scenario, a pack of young bucks is wandering around a park and jump a jogger. In either case, the gang is usually united by a common knowledge or bond — they’re all buddies of some sort. But in flash mob rape, this bond dissolves into randomness and anonymity. The only thing the mob would have in common is the fact that they stumbled over an internet posting somewhere. Otherwise they’re perfect strangers — and that just might lead to the ability to commit a perfect crime, since none of them could rat out any other.

Of course, two can play this game. If flash mob rape were ever to become a reality — which, to be clear, it hasn’t yet — then it would be only fitting for victims to form flash castration gangs. In this scenario they’d probably just scroll through the sex offender registries freely available online, pick a heinous perp, agree to meet at his house at some random time — and then watch out Mr. Sex Criminal. Presumably it would only take a few highly publicized flash mob castrations to cause any number of potential flash mob rapists to be “scared straight.”
