Rapist Believed He Was Ozzy
“A man drugged and sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl because he believed he was rock star Ozzy Osbourne and had to follow in his footsteps, a Sydney court was told today. Arthur Fairwell, 39, is facing a sentencing hearing in the NSW District Court, where he has pleaded guilty to six charges over the assault of the girl and the drugging of her and her mother. Fairwell met the girl’s mother through a telephone dating service in May 2004. The court has previously been told that he drugged the woman and her daughter with a sedative at their south-western Sydney home before sexually assaulting the teenage girl. Making submissions on sentence today, defence barrister Greg Scragg told the court Fairwell had discussed his mental state at the time of the offences with a forensic psychiatrist. ‘My client had come to form the belief he was Ozzy Osbourne, the lead singer in the heavy metal rock group known as Black Sabbath,’ Mr Scragg said. ‘He became obsessed with the idea that he had to do what Ozzy Osbourne had done.’ Mr Scragg said Fairwell had learned of a claim that Osbourne had had sex with a 13-year-old girl. The lawyer said that, because of his client’s obsessive beliefs, Fairwell felt compelled to follow in the singer’s footsteps. ‘He was suffering from a delusion that he was Ozzy Osbourne and had to do what Ozzy Osbourne was believed to have done and have sex with a 13-year-old girl,’ Mr Scragg told the court. Judge Helen Murrell said a previous court hearing was told medical evidence that Fairwell was ‘deliberately putting on a performance to simulate a (psychiatric) condition’.” — News.com.au (Australia)
A crucial distinction is being obscured here. Does the guy believe that he really is Ozzy Osbourne, or is he just crazy for the Ozz Man? Is he delusional or is he obsessive? These are two very different things. If he really thinks he’s Ozzy, it makes no sense to perform acts that emulate the aging rocker. To the contrary, he should believe that he’s already done them. “Yes,” he should think, “I have screwed teenage groupies. And every new outrage I commit adds to my myth, for I am Ozzy.” That’s how a delusion operates. It’s like those nutjobs who think that they’re Napoleon. Or to take a more recent example, John Mark Karr appears to suffer from such a delusion. According to reports, Karr genuinely believes that he murdered JonBenet Ramsey.
Mr. Fairwell does not appear to be delusional in this manner, and for that reason he is probably not mentally ill. To the contrary, his best defense is to claim that he suffers from an obsession with Ozzy that has reached pathological proportions. To prove this, he might want to engage in some non-rape copycat crimes — the behavioral equivalents of air guitar. For example, he could bite off bats’ heads and pee on the Alamo. And if he hesitates to follow the Ozz Man in these, then you’ll know that Mr. Fairwell isn’t quite “going off the rails on a crazy train” and is just a jerk trying to get away with rape.
