Police Crack Down On Striptease Funerals

“Striptease send-offs at funerals may become a thing of the past in east China after five people were arrested for organizing the intimate farewells, state media reported on Wednesday. Police swooped last week after two groups of strippers gave ‘obscene performances’ at a farmer’s funeral in Donghai County, Jiangsu province, Xinhua news agency said. The disrobing served a higher purpose, the report noted. ‘Striptease used to be a common practice at funerals in Donghai’s rural areas to allure viewers,’ it said. ‘Local villagers believe that the more people who attend the funeral, the more the dead person is honored.’ Wealthy families often employed two troupes of performers to attract a crowd. Two hundred showed up at last week’s funeral. Five strippers were detained and local officials ‘issued notices concerning funeral management,’ Xinhua said. Now village officials must submit plans for funerals within 12 hours after a villager dies. And residents can report ‘funeral misdeeds’ on a hotline, the report said.” — Reuters (US)

It can sometimes be astonishing to observe the mysterious ways in which fiction and reality can come into alignment. In its recent book Necrophilia Variations, Supervert — creator of PervScan, for those of you who don’t already know — wrote several times about strippers performing at funerals, graveyards, and the like. It seemed like an obvious conjunction of sex and death, though Supervert had no idea that there were actually societies on earth who made a practice of it. And then this little article made its appearance in the weekly perversion scan, describing a farmer launched into the afterworld with obscene fanfare. Hell, it’s uncanny. It’s a cliché to say that truth is stranger than fiction, but perhaps the parallelism between reality and imagination is strangest of all. When you imagine something then discover that it’s real, does it add to the reality of your creation? Or does it make the thing itself a little less real?

Evidently that’s what legal authorities in east China would like to do — push this practice into non-existence. It’s too bad, because it’s hard to see what’s wrong with it. Men often joke about “going out with a smile on their faces,” suffering cardiac arrest in the arms of a buxom hottie. Wouldn’t it give them just as much pleasure to think of pallbearers being replaced by Playboy bunnies? No doubt it would — but then you have to remember that when men die, the funeral ceremonies are really for their wives, who probably don’t appreciate the sight of strippers prancing on their husbands’ coffins.

Ah…life imitating art.

And Necrophilia Variations is art of the highest form.
