“A homosexual man abducted and repeatedly raped a woman to see if he was capable of having sex with a female, a Darwin court has heard. Wayne Andrew Hampton, 37, pleaded guilty to 13 counts of rape, gross indecency, assault and deprivation of liberty after abducting two women from Darwin’s city centre in April last year. The first woman escaped by jumping out of a moving car near SkyCity casino. The second was raped and sodomised on a dirt track near Batchelor, 80km south of Darwin, and in Hampton’s Nightcliff apartment over five hours, the Northern Territory Supreme Court heard. The 21-year-old woman’s ordeal only ended when she slipped her shackles and ran naked into the street, flagging down a passing car. Prosecutor Elisabeth Armitage told the court the victim’s ‘terrifying, degrading and horrific’ ordeal began when Hampton grabbed her off the street. He put her in the boot of his car and drove to bush near Batchelor about 6am (ACST). Once there, he slapped her several times and made her perform oral sex on him before raping her. The court heard Hampton, who claims to have hepatitis C, did not use a condom. He then put the woman back in the boot and drove to his Nightcliff apartment, where he raped her anally and with a blunt instrument. Hampton, who was in a homosexual relationship at the time, then hog-tied the woman, put a pillow case over her head and went to sleep. When a homosexual man rapes a straight woman, it generates a fair amount of cognitive dissonance. It interferes with your categorization of sexual proclivities. Surely many homosexuals wonder about straight sex, the same as many heterosexuals wonder about gay sex. But to go out and rape someone implies an overwhelming desire, and it is incongruous to imagine a gay man in the grips of an overwhelming desire for a woman. It makes no sense. It’s like a vegetarian killing a cow and eating it raw out of an overwhelming desire for meat. Well, if he has such a craving for beef, how is it that he’s a vegetarian? Ditto this rapist: if he has such a lust for vag, how is it that he’s a homosexual?
To clear up the confusion you end up scrutinizing the case a bit more closely. On one hand, you note that much of what he did was not gender-specific. Oral, anal, insertion of “blunt instrument” — you can do that with man or woman. The story doesn’t specifically say that the perp ever got near the part of the woman that makes her a woman, though apparently that’s the “rape” that occurred somewhere between the oral and the anal. Meanwhile, you don’t know what the rapist was thinking about the entire time. Was he fantasizing about a man while poking the woman?
On the other hand, there is the rapist’s admission that “I was quite amazed I had sex with her before and I wanted to see if I could do it again.” This too is confusing. It does not seem to pertain to his motive to rape because, so far as you can make out from the news, the guy never had sex with this woman before. He just snatched her off a street. If anything, the statement seems to pertain more to the fact that he kept her around after satisfying his initial urge. He raped her once out in the bush somewhere — no pun intended — then took her home and tied her up. Maybe he was amazed that he raped her the first time and intended to keep her around for a while to see if he would be interested in raping her again?
No doubt these questions reflect the rapist’s own befuddlement. Plainly he was confused not just about his sexual orientation but about sex itself. “To have sex with a woman” usually means obtaining consent in some way, whether through romance, seduction, or even prostitution. Consequently, this homosexual did not want sex with a woman. He wanted violence with a woman. And perhaps that fact helps clear up any confusion about gender roles. You don’t have to be straight to want to hurt a woman.

To me your analysis at the end hit the nail on the head. Rape is more about violence and power than sex or pleasure, more often than not. To me, his actions speak to a great hatred of, or evens revulsion towards, women. You note that he seemed to mainly engage in gender neutral sex acts and expressed amazement at his ability to rape her (perhaps he thought a feeling of disgust would make an erection impossible?) He reminds me of some of the characters in de Sade’s works. Perhaps his words and actions highlight a similar disdain for women and their “cunts,” to use de Sade’s characters frequently favored term,.
