“Gary Drake’s job was to drive 66 Eden Prairie day campers and their chaperones to a water park in Eagan last week. But authorities say the 47-year-old bus driver also joined the kids in the pool at Cascade Bay Water Park and had sexual contact with two little girls. He was arrested and charged Friday with two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct and is being held at the Dakota County jail. Drake, of Eden Prairie, appears to have no prior criminal record, according to authorities. A 5-year-old girl told her mother July 13 that while she and a 7-year-old friend were in the pool, they pulled Drake’s swimsuit waistband away from his body and reached into his swimsuit and touched his penis. The children were in a camp from Northwest Athletic Club. She and the friend later told Eagan police investigators the same thing and said Drake told them not to tell anyone what they had done. Drake told police he knew he should not have allowed the children to do this and admitted he became somewhat aroused when they touched him, according to the complaint. Eagan police officer Danielle Anselment said parents should talk to children about what is appropriate behavior for adults and children, and should try to keep an open line of communication with their children about sensitive topics.” — Pioneer Press (US)

Most children express some curiosity about the secret parts of the body and their functions. Kids play doctor, show-and-tell with their privates, and so on. In that regard, this is a very common occurrence and, if it remains among equals, most parents will write it off for what it is: curiosity. But when it crosses age boundaries, it becomes a dicey issue. Suppose you’re at the pool or the beach and some kid grabs you in the crotch. How should you react? If you push him away and say, “Gimme a ten-year raincheck on that action, kiddo. Come see me when you’re 19,” then you’ve given no one any reason to lynch you. But if you let the kid grope around in there, or if you tell the kid your hot dog can squirt mayonnaise, then you should probably just report yourself to the local police precinct before the men in blue come to arrest you in a public and therefore embarrassing place.

Which tact did Mr. Drake take? None of the news articles are explicit on his reaction, though he admitted to becoming “somewhat aroused.” He also theorized that he had allowed the two little girls to touch him because of “temptation.” Legally this was probably an incriminating choice of words. It implies that this was something more than an isolated incident, that he harbored urges to which these two little girls appealed. At any rate, it would certainly be prudent to forbid him from driving schoolbuses or joining kids in a swimming pool. You know the old maxim: it’s best to keep temptation out of harm’s way.
