“A former Henry County coroner who resigned amid charges that he propositioned a woman for sex will not serve jail time as part of his plea agreement. Delaware Circuit Court Judge Wayne Lennington on Monday accepted Robert Troxell’s guilty plea to attempted vicarious sexual gratification and sentenced the 35-year-old to three years in prison, all suspended… Troxell resigned as coroner on July 1, 2005, days after he was arrested for allegedly offering a Muncie woman $750 to have sex in front of her children. Here is a picture of Mr. Troxell. With that heavy brow and square head, he looks a bit like a thug. It’s easy to imagine him cutting up dead bodies.

Whenever a coroner does something naughty — and Mr. Troxell is certainly not the first — it always carries a strange hint of death about it. If you’ve ever been around a gross anatomy lab, you know that the smell of embalming fluid tends to hang in your clothes, your hair, and so it’s easy to imagine a coroner and funeral home director bringing a whiff of death when he shows up at a motel for some illicit lovin’. But necrophilia was not Mr. Troxell’s game, or if it was his victims aren’t talking. Really he appears to be a pedophile who happens to have a necrophile’s dream job.

Mr. Troxell offered $750 to a mother of four young children in exchange for having sex with her in front of her children, all of whom were less than eleven years old. He claimed to have been joking about it, but it’s hardly a credible excuse. One newspaper published a transcript of the chat that got him arrested. Badgirl4163 offers to have her eighteen-year-old “sister” watch the two of them. Mr. Troxell considers it, wonders whether she’s lying, pursues his original line of enquiry: “i would feel better if it was one of urs. . . i would never tell, , u can trust me.” After this they bicker about prices.

Hardly sounds like a joke, does it? Especially when you consider that police also found child pornography on one of Mr. Troxell’s computers. Based on the evidence, it is difficult not to think that Mr. Troxell wanted something more than just to be watched by children. Perhaps he saw this exhibitionism as a cover story for just getting children into the room, at which point anything could happen.

Given the circumstances, it’s astonishing that Mr. Troxell is serving no jail time and that authorities are allowing him to continue living with his own children. Then again, getting arrested and publicly humiliated has probably made a mess of Mr. Troxell’s life. Fear alone may serve to protect his own children from any wayward impulses — but it may not protect the dead bodies. Somehow it doesn’t seem like a stretch to think that here is a necrophile in the making.
