Happy Birthday, PervScan
May 1st 2006 is PervScan’s official 3rd birthday. If you browse through the archives of the site, you’ll see that there were actually posts made prior to that date. Those were carried over from the first larval incarnation of PervScan, which briefly appeared on the mother ship at supervert.com. That first incarnation was only online for a few days before Supervert realized that it would make a fine site of its own — and that, in a nutshell, is how PervScan came to be.
It’s been an amazing and educational three years running this blog. From the outset Supervert decided not to write PervScan in the first person — partly a perverse impulse to repudiate the canonical diary tone of a 2003 blog, partly to emphasize that PervScan was not about an individual but about a random flood of illicit acts. Given that initial condition — i.e. avoidance of the first person — it took a few months for Supervert to find the right voice for PervScan. Eventually Supervert realized that the blog is different than a book, which you write for eternity. The blog you write for the day. It’s conversational — and thus also provisional, like a discussion. You might venture to say something to see how it sounds, whereas in writing a book you’d consider your words much more scrupulously.
As PervScan evolved, one of the most fascinating moments occurred when the amount of user comments came to exceed the number of posts. As an author, you watch this with pleasure — after all, people are reading you — and horror, since you’re losing control. Often people leave comments or initiate discussions that end up being more perspicacious or humorous (thank you, Zephyrteetee, for many laughs) than your original posts. At the same time, though, you end up having to decide how to moderate everybody. Do you censor user comments? What if somebody says something hateful or hurtful? Do you let it fly? If so, are you prepared as a site owner to take the consequences? It can be a hard lesson to learn that writing publicly about a crime can implicate you in its various repercussions. Crede experto.
There are obvious rewards to publishing a site such as PervScan — readership, publicity, influence, a modest revenue — but at the same time there’s a lot of bullshit you have to put up with. Spam has been an unending nightmare. There are dopes who send you unsolicited emails that begin something like, “I want to fuck a sea lion. Can you help me?” There are hostile, threatening emails from people who have been “tainted” by some association with the site. There are “fans” who become, uh, overenthusiastic in their appreciation or their (mis)interpretation of your mandate — these may be the freakiest of all, the ones who think they’re on your side but really have no clue. You come to understand the paranoia of celebrities.
Having written 842 articles and having contemplated thousands of sex crimes in the last three years, Supervert has decided to put PervScan on hold for the month of May 2006. The site will still be online but there will (probably) be no new posts. Supervert will be using the time to explore some new projects and also to reevaluate this one. It’s possible that, at month’s end, Supervert will decide to shut down PervScan altogether. It’s also possible that the site will continue on as before. We’re thinking through some issues which hopefully a bit of distance will help to clarify. If you have any opinion on the matter, you’re welcome to leave a comment on this post.

First off congratulations on the milestone. Secondly, I truly hope Pervscan comes back soon it will be missed I’m sure there’s lots of people who like me check it often and post seldomly. Cheers to an immensely entertaining sight.
Pervscan was the first Blog I read on a Daily basis. I have shared it with family, friends and coworkers. Not on a “morbid” intent but on a educational one. To know there are different things than only the missionary position.
I would be very sad it Pervscan stopped being. Hope it keeps going. The humor it’s very good, and the commentary is excellent.
Anyway, congratulations for this 3 years, an excellent work.

To be clear, Supervert is not saying that the site will definitely close down, only that it’s a possibility. (The odds are about 50/50 at the moment.) The site will be taking a break during the month of May, and after that Supervert will make a decision.

If like me, you watch a lot of BBC News 24 and Sky News, you would agree that a site like Pervscan gives you a refreshing change, and reminds you that there is always something more weird than yourself, out there.
There is one time when shutting down Pervscan will be valid: when a shortage of sexually deviant idiots becomes a reality.

This site is one of my favourite morning reads. Found it via searching for something or other that was mentioned in Savage Love about a year ago and have been following it avidly ever since. Would be very sad if it went away.
When I set up business on this wonderful WWW, the biggest shock of all was the general stupidity of the general Internet public. And that is saying a lot…because this sure isn’t Mensa material typing this right now. The second shock was the rude intrusions into my personal space which these idiots believed was their inherent right.
