Farmworker Jailed for Sex with Grieving Teenager

Jonathan Simpson, 21, met the 13-year-old for the first time at a fireworks display at Wiveliscombe Rugby Club last November when she became upset over her mother’s death. She showed him scars where she had cut herself while grieving and Simpson proposed a visit to her mother’s grave. After a time, they began kissing and had sex on the ground, said Samuel Butterworth, prosecuting at Taunton Crown Court. Sometimes there are news stories that make you wonder about the fine line between a crime and a lesser sort of action that may be stupid, irresponsible, even immoral, but not criminal. Here you have a young man, purportedly drunk, who has consensual relations with a grieving underage girl. The fact that she was in mourning and that they had sex just yards from her mother’s grave is meaningless. It may be uncouth, but it’s not illegal. Besides which, you ever hear the expression, “There’s only one way to cure a widow?” For a thirteen-year-old, it may well be a better form of consolation to have sex with somebody than to go around cutting herself. Maybe a little affection would mitigate the feelings of self-hatred that caused her to mutilate herself.
When you consider it this way, this incident seems irresponsible but not especially criminal. However, on the other hand, the young man already had some brushes with the law, including one for indecent assault. He once bragged to his boss that he no longer asked girls their age, for fear of learning that they were underage — and this seems to suggest that he liked young girls but wanted to maintain “plausible deniability” about whether he actually knew they were too young. And in the final analysis, it’s illegal to sleep with a girl who’s younger than the local age of consent. It doesn’t matter that thirteen-year-olds may be having all sorts of sex. It’s like smoking marijuana: many may do it, but it’s still illegal. They don’t call young girls jailbait for nothing.
So was this just a gross act of irresponsibility? Is this the sort of thing people would have shrugged off ten or twenty years ago? Or is this really a criminal action worth putting a young man in prison for eighteen months and placing him on a sex offender registry for life?
“Indecent assault?” Does that mean there is such a thing as a decent assault?
Armchair observation: Young girls are especially prone to cutting themselves while suffering mental anguish, such as grieving the loss of a loved one. It’s their way of trying to take away the pain they are feeling. And, they are at a vulnerable stage and ripe for picking (getting seduced) by the first Romeo that makes a play for them.
It looks like Jonathan Simpson was at the right place at the right time to take advantage of this young girl. And it sounds like this is not the first time he has did this either, (bragging to his boss). At the age of 21 he is probably an old pro by now.

I’m sorry, I don’t buy the concept that having (likely) unprotected sex with a person who clearly fetishized the sex they were having is a good, healthy or constructive form of consolation. It’s also hard to imagine that with the complicated sexual attitudes in North America at the moment that this experience will be thought of as “simple affection”. Personally, I doubt that an experience of this kind would do *anything* to stop her cutting herself in the long run. In fact, it would probably contribute to the problem.
That’s right, he was consoling himself for being such a loser, not her for her loss. And he may be an old pro, but his technique makes him look like a child, at least emotionally.

The sex was consensual but can 13yr old girls have the full mentality to have sex with an older man, I think not.
