Professor Allegedly Shows Explicit Video

A criminal justice professor at Grand Rapids Community College has resigned after showing a video in class of a man having sex with a pig, students and a faculty representative said. A school administrator confirmed that Samuel Naves, 47, resigned Feb. 17, but would not comment on why he left. However, students and a faculty leader said the resignation had to do with the video. They said Naves was teaching an introductory criminal justice class earlier this year when he was going through video files on his computer. The video appeared on a projection screen and students begged Naves to show the 10-second footage, according to the accounts. Faculty association president Fred van Hartesveldt said the incident occurred this year. He said Naves was known for a blunt teaching style. ‘His pedagogy was to teach real life,’ van Hartesveldt told The Grand Rapids Press. ‘His classes were very earthy. Some students took to that very well, and some students didn’t.’”— Billings Gazettte (US)

A search of the web site for Grand Rapids Community College doesn’t reveal much about Professor Naves. He sat in on a few board meetings, one of which served to recognize Martin Luther King. A former student once called him “a really hyper black guy named Sam Naves” on a blog page that has been deleted but that remains in Google’s cache. According to the comments on RateMyProfessors.com, Professor Naves was not exactly respected by his students. Here’s a sample: “Most unprofessional teacher ever. I seriously question his credentials — did he get his degree off of the internet? He tries to mask his ignorance in CJ [Criminal Justice] behind a facade of ‘real world’ examples that are offensive and incorrect.”

Unprofessional, offensive, incorrect — that about sums up a teacher who would show a bestiality video to a college class, particularly when the video did not appear to have anything to do with the matter to hand. To be fair, reports say that, once Professor Naves accidentally put it on screen, students clamored to watch it. But naturally that does not mean he should have gone ahead and aired the video. Maybe it was a sort of desperate maneuver to cover up for his mistake. If he’d refused to show the video, it would have looked as though he had inadvertently hinted at the weird porn he was harboring on his computer. By showing it, he could make the case that he had nothing to be ashamed of. He was simply showing a snippet of a video that he kept on his computer for research purposes.

(That raises an always weird question: what is the line between possessing an illegal substance for personal use and possessing an illegal substance for “legitimate” research? PervScan was reading a book about sexual psychopathology one time and noted that its author had studied actual examples of 1970s child pornography in the New York Public Library. Hunh? What sort of “special collection” contains that stuff?)

At any rate, Professor Naves has resigned. What else could he do? Interestingly, though, the president of the faculty association defended him by stating that “his pedagogy was to teach real life.” This prompted an editor in another newspaper to joke: “That’s a great pedagogy. But I don’t think it supersedes the ‘don’t show your criminal justice class bestiality’ pedagogy that most professors hold so dear.”

“His pedagogy was to teach real life,” is a great statement in support of Prof. Naves. Where I get confused though, is when exactly did pig fucking become a part of real life?
Growing up on a farm in rural Alabama, I remember the one chore of “slopping the hogs” twice a day. During the summer months, the smell was incredible, (which explains why hog pens are located a long way from farm houses), and you would hold your breath and not breathe till you had fed and watered the pigs and had a chance to get away for fresh air. I can assure that any thoughts of sexual activity with the swine never entered my mind.
Now it appears that Prof. Naves has been caught (with his pants down…so to speak)with beastality porn on his computer. That’s one thing, to have it for private viewing, but to teach a college class, and show it to the class is something else entirely. This man is either doesn’t care or he’s a loose cannon and should not be teaching any one.

exposure to what’s happening in the world around us is not a bad thing. the ways those kids interpret the clip would be more dependant on the way they’re brought up and the society they live in

they were COLLEGE kids, most of them close to adult age, who were shown a clip of a man fucking a pig

i love this website, and a great many articles in the bestiality section describe the act to some degree. and i’m pretty sure a lot of younger people come here and read this articles too. nothing wrong with that at all. and nothing wrong with this

it’s how those college boys and college girls deal with it that matters. considering it was a class of criminal justice, they would have to interpret much, MUCH harder things later in their lives than a man and a pig getting it on
