Sex Mall Highlights Changing Attitudes in Mexico

“In the heart of Mexico City’s historic district, a Colonial-style building houses a sexual revolution of sorts. It’s a new mall dedicated to sex and adult entertainment. There are 100 shops in all, specializing in lingerie, alluring scents, erotic jewelry and publications. ‘It’s very new,’ said sex mall developer Alberto Kibrit. ‘We don’t have a lot of competition.’ Sex is a growth industry in Mexico as more people are open to explore the topic in this predominantly Catholic country. The mall is brightly painted and well-lit. The developer wanted to create an open atmosphere, one he hopes reflects Mexico’s new attitude about sex. ‘It’s something healthy,’ said shopper Bernardo Frias. His girlfriend, Angelica Marina, found the stores ‘very interesting.’ Later, they planned to visit the food court, where the lunch crowd is treated to a show. Access to the sex mall is strictly controlled; no minors are allowed. Business was brisk, even before its grand opening, but there are critics. ‘Many people are not in favor of it,’ said a vendor who sells trinkets right outside. But she added that she has no complaints because sales at her stand are up since the sex mall opened.” —WFAA (US)

Here in America the latest trend has been the adult superstore — a clean, well-lighted place for porn, sex toys, lingerie, and the like. Now this sex mall or sex plaza, as it is sometimes known, has taken this trend to its next logical step. Why have just one superstore occupying some distant intersection when you can group together a number of different businesses? It’s sort of like what Times Square in New York used to be before Rudy Giuliani “cleaned it up” — except that Times Square was neither clean nor well-lighted. It was more like a dirty, neon-lighted place for porn, sex toys, lingerie, and the like.

But if that old Times Square is now gone, this sort of sex mall would certainly be an appropriate thing to take its place. The Mexico sex plaza sounds like an entertaining place. There’s a Museo del Sexo, movie theaters, sex shops, and even strippers in the food court. Here in America critics sometimes lament the dehumanizing aspect of suburban development. You think they’d welcome this sort of “strip mall” instead?

Makes me wish I still lived in Mexico City… I remember the Zona Rosa at night was a pretty wild place too.
