“A pensioner and serial sex pest who lured a 26-year-old St Albans woman into his car will be released from prison only when he is no longer a danger to the public. Frank Hipgrave, aged 72 from Hatfield, tricked the woman into his car on Cell Barnes Lane by saying he knew her father. He touched her on her upper thigh and attempted place her hand on his trousers, saying ‘rub this’. Hipgrave has spent years cruising the streets looking for women and has offences of sexual and indecent assault stretching back more than 30 years. This is the first time that he has been sent to prison and he will be forced to serve at least 12 months. St Albans Crown Court heard on Friday how the woman had been walking home at about midday on May 18 this year when Hipgrave pulled up beside her. He held her by the wrists and she was only able to get away by saying that she would meet him later if he let her out of the car. As he drove away the woman wrote the car’s registration on her hand using lipstick.” —The Herts Advertiser (UK)

If you ever wanted to find a deviant illustration of the old maxim that “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” then this would be it. For at least thirty years this guy has been cruising around and trying to pick up anyone gullible enough to get into his car. When you have a look at the squinty old guy, you can see him out on the golf course one moment and then turning into some sadistic bastard in his car the next. There’s something mean about his face. How could there not be? He was out trying to molest a girl the day after his wife died (a fact spelled out by another paper).

The weird part about this story, though, is that nobody ever seemed to bother even trying to teach this old dog a new trick. In 1971 he raped a girl and “was given a six month custodial sentence suspended for two years.” In 1981 he assaulted a fourteen-year-old girl and received a year of probation. In 2000 he was trying to pick up girls at a bus stop and was merely “warned” by police. This latest case in 2005 is the first for which he is going to jail — after a lifetime of predatory offenses. It certainly makes you want to amend that old maxim. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks — if you don’t try.
