PervScan’s Policy on Email Addresses

A few users have been frustrated recently by the fact that PervScan has been disallowing people from posting email addresses in comments. To be clear, you have to give an email address to the site in order to post a comment. However, PervScan has been deleting email addresses that appear in the text of comments themselves.

While this may seem like a draconian and, for a blog, slightly unusual step, PervScan has come to take this position for two reasons:

First, it is very difficult for PervScan to determine that a user is genuinely posting his own email address and not somebody else’s. And while the law is not yet clear as to just how responsible a site owner is for material posted by users, PervScan wants to be very careful to avoid any charges of defamation or harrassment that could derive from wrongly posted email addresses.

Second, PervScan does not want the site to serve as an exchange of any sort. Most of the material published here is dicey. Some of it concerns activities that are frankly illegal. If people start making use of the site to swap kiddie porn or bestiality videos, law enforcement will shut the site down or PervScan will be sued or arrested or kicked off the net by its web host. So the prudent thing, for self-survival if for nothing else, is to disallow those sorts of communications.

Underlying both of these points is the assumption that various law enforcement agencies monitor or at least visit this site. Without being paranoid about it, PervScan has reason to think that this is true. You’d be amazed at the number of posts that PervScan deletes that read something like, “Hi, I’m a hot fourteen-year-old girl who wants to be fucked by a dog. Show me how! Write to xxx@yyy.com.” The smart money says that these posts are not written by hot fourteen-year-olds but rather by forty-year-old men with silver badges in their wallets. So caveat emptor.

It is unfortunate if this email policy frustrates any well-intentioned users. For those of you in that camp, the best way to circumvent the policy is to post a url to your own site or blog. (If you don’t have one, you can easily sign up for a free site on livejournal.com, blogger.com, etc.) You can ask users to contact you through your own site — and then you’re on your own, since it’s clear that PervScan would bear no legal responsibility for what you do at your own site.
