Suspected Voyeur Arrested Atop TV Antenna
“A Fond du Lac man is jailed after he was caught climbing up a TV antenna on the outside of a two-story house in North Fond du Lac. Police in North Fond du Lac say he may have been trying to take pictures of a woman inside the house. The 57-year-old man was caught around 6 o’clock Monday morning. Police said the man told them he liked trains and was taking pictures of trains from atop the TV antenna. Police said his story just did not add up, given that the tracks are at least a football field’s distance away. Officers got a search warrant for his car, and found a video camera and videotapes of women. Officers say the video was obviously shot through a window.” —WBAY (US)
Obviously the guy’s train-watching excuse was a desperate attempt to avoid jail. According to another story about the case, cops verified that the guy’s camera contained “images of a partially nude woman” who could be “seen on the video changing clothes.” It’s hard to see how he could have accidentally ended up with this voyeuristic footage on his camera if he’d only been out watching trains. Perhaps what he meant to say was that he was out looking for training bras.
Setting aside this silly excuse, you have to pause for a moment and simply admire the image this guy created — not in his camera but in his actions. Imagine a guy scaling an “18-foot tall television antenna tower” just to get some crappy video footage a woman changing her clothes. There’s that strange parallelism between the video camera, designed to capture images, and the antenna, designed to broadcast them. There’s that contrast between the public nature of a broadcast and the private nature of the video — doubly “private” in that it captured intimate moments and probably would have been used for personal gratification in a different sort of intimate moment. There’s electricity, radiation, metal, video, voyeurism, flashes of flesh. It’s almost a modernist allegory, like a futurist poem or a manifesto by F.T. Marinetti. If it was a sculpture, you’d call it “Lust Climbs the TV Tower” or “Voyeur on a Scaffold, Recklessly” or something.
Ya know, back in the days of pagan Hebrews (among others) holy women slept with men for an offering at the temple. No one with a Y chromosome went without, as long as they had a goodie for a goodie. The lengths some men have to go through just for a little comfort is appalling. We all need sex and drugs and rock and roll (among others) just to get by in today’s workaday world. Make love not war.
Well someone had to say it…
