“A Lafferty man is being held without bond in the Belmont County Jail after being arrested Saturday for allegedly having sexual contact with a neighbor’s dog. John Paskel, 52, of 70204 Irwin St. was arrested Saturday and charged with cruelty to animals and a probation violation after he was reportedly seen having sex with the animal at a Lafferty residence. Paskel is being held on $100 bond on the animal cruelty charge, but there is no bond on his alleged probation violation… At 10:42 a.m. Saturday, a caller at an unspecified Lafferty residence reported catching Paskel having sex with the dog on both Friday and Saturday. The caller said the dog’s owners were out of town, and the alleged incidents took place at their residence. She said her husband went outside Saturday and yelled at Paskel before he allegedly ran from the scene. Paskel was taken into custody at his home later that day. On Monday, Belmont County Animal Shelter Director Verna Painter said she had no knowledge of the allegations against Paskel. She also said she cannot recall any similar allegations being reported to the Belmont County Animal Shelter. Painter noted that the dog in this alleged incident was likely injured. ‘I can’t imagine the animal will be in good shape,’ Painter said. ‘We haven’t had to investigate anything like that. I don’t know what to say. Obviously, we would first make sure the dog was taken care of and checked by a vet. Apparently, the police have taken care of that.’” —Times Leader (US)

Often when you read a story such as this, you have to pause and ask yourself what you would do if you found yourself in a similar situation. Suppose your neighbors go away for a weekend and they ask you to keep an eye on their place. On Friday you see a guy getting naked with their dog. What do you do? Call the cops? The SPCA? Fire a warning shot in the air? Spray the guy with a gardening hose?

Evidently the neighbors in this case scared the guy off and figured they’d leave it at that. But then the perp, having got a free pass the first time, found his unconsummated dog-lust too powerful to resist. He returned on Saturday for further canine action. The neighbors weren’t going to stand for it a second time, so they called the cops. (Do note, however, that the cops only arrested the man later. Did he leave evidence at the scene? Did the neighbors recognize the guy? Did he have a telling mole or unique tattoo on his ass? Did they examine the dog for DNA evidence, perhaps sperm in its fur?)

Once the dog owner came home to discover that the family pet had been abused, she was pretty irate. She wants to law enforcement to throw the book at the guy. “I explained to the prosecutor that (the dog) is on a chain, and it happened on my property where there are no trespassing signs,” the owner told another paper. “Why not criminal trespass?… It seems like no one takes this seriously. It may be a dog, but it’s been in my family for nine-and-a-half years.” Good points. Why not criminal trespass? Because it’s probably an insignificant charge in comparison the fact that the man, already a convicted sex offender, violated not just a dog but also his parole. And if cops have a hard time taking a dog-fucker seriously — after all, they do see worse deeds in the course of a career — they certainly don’t take it for granted when somebody messes with his parole. That’s like screwing law enforcement itself.
