New Orleans: Katrina, Rape, Hurricane Sex, Blame the Gays
Like the Asian tsunami of 2004, Hurricane Katrina seems to have brought out both the best and the worst in people. The best are the acts of heroism and charity to which many have risen. The worst — well, every day the newspapers feature lurid headlines announcing bestial behavior. For example, for the last week nearly every story about New Orleans has talked about rapes committed on the streets and in the refugee centers. Evidently it’s the sexual equivalent of looting.
Weirdly, though, the frequency of the word rape in headlines and news leads contrasts with the scarcity of any actual accounts of rape in the accompanying stories. An eyewitness writing for the independent news source Alternet was reduced to calling them “rumors.” But is that because the rapes didn’t occur? Because they were drowned out in the general flood of hideous news? Because there simply weren’t any reliable sources (law enforcement or medical personnel) to verify them? It’s difficult to say.
PervScan spent long hours scanning for more concrete allegations of rape. Here is one account that was reproduced in many newspapers:
They killed a man here last night,” Steve Banka, 28, told Reuters. “A young lady was being raped and stabbed. And the sounds of her screaming got to this man and so he ran out into the street to get help from troops, to try to flag down a passing truck of them, and he jumped up on the truck’s windscreen and they shot him dead.”
A member of that family, Africa Brumfield, 32, confirmed the incident but declined to be quoted about it, saying her family did not wish to discuss it. But she spoke of general conditions here.
“There is rapes going on here. Women cannot go to the bathroom without men. They are raping them and slitting their throats. They keep telling us the buses are coming but they never leave,” she said through tears.
At the arena, too, there was much talk of bedlam after dark.
“We found a young girl raped and killed in the bathroom,” one National Guard soldier told Reuters. “Then the crowd got the man and they beat him to death.”
This could certainly be true. At the same time, it has an air of exaggeration about it. Is that because it’s difficult to believe the level of brutality that extreme circumstances have elicited from people? Is it because the victims themselves are so overwhelmed that everything seems even more overpowering than it is (in such a fashion that a rape or two gets amplified in imagination to rampant rape)?
Here’s another account that, because it lacks specificity, sounds more like rumor than fact (or perhaps more like distorted fact than actual fact):
Since the floodwaters surged on Tuesday it had become the refuge for thousands of people and then their prison; but worse than a prison, they said, as there was no security, no food or water, no electricity for three days. During this time, they said, girls and boys were raped in the dark and had their throats cut and bodies were stuffed in the kitchens while looters and madmen exchanged fire with weapons they had looted.
“Just been born the wrong colour,” shouted Larry Martin, one of the last to leave the Convention Center. “If these people were a bunch of Caucasian Americans out there, this would never have happened. They would have taken everybody. Everything you heard is true. We got first food and water on Friday [the fourth day inside]. They [looters and gunmen] were shooting at buses, the rapes, the murders, the sodomy.”
One story in particular seems to have been behind this perception that rapes and murders were rampant in the kitchen of the Superdome. Many newspapers reproduced this account:
Sitting with her daughter and other relatives, Trolkyn Joseph, 37, said men had wandered the cavernous convention centre in recent nights raping and murdering children.
She said she found a dead 14-year old girl at 5 a.m. on Friday morning, four hours after the young girl went missing from her parents inside the convention centre.
“She was raped for four hours until she was dead,” Joseph said through tears. “Another child, a seven-year old boy was found raped and murdered in the kitchen freezer last night.”
Several others interviewed by Reuters told similar stories of the abuse and murder of children, but they could not be independently verified.
This one has a ring of truth to it. It’s specific and plausible. It doesn’t imply that there were mass rapes with quasi-ritualistic murders — an allegation which makes it sound as though every person down there has become some sort of satanist animal, when in reality any sex crimes are probably being committed by a very small number of already corrupt individuals. That is in fact the allegation of a British tourist:
Adam Friend, 21, of Exeter, told BBC News he felt unsafe, saying: “It turned into a race issue in there…it was only a minority of the people that did it, but they made us feel very unsafe, throwing bottles at us.
“The girls that were with us were constantly getting groped and stuff and there was sexual abuse.”
While this must have been awful enough in itself, it stops short of claiming that there were actual rapes — a not insignificant fact given that the girls were white and British. While the race issues dredged up by Katrina may be difficult to speak about, it would be easy to believe that these girls would get singled out precisely because, in the Superdome, they were minorities. Conversely, it’s also possible that this might have earned them preferential treatment from authorities.
One of the few official statements from authorities about rape came from police dealing with the refugees in Houston. In fact, authorities there were almost phlegmatic about it:
Many of the refugees have recounted horror stories from the Superdome, where some have said children were sexually assaulted.
Lumpkin said there is suspicion that some of the children who have arrived in Houston were violated in New Orleans. Police and child welfare workers are looking into the cases.
Sexual assaults have not been a problem in Houston, he said.
“There has been some indication that there has been some consensual sex observed that has been stopped,” he said.
Overnight, HPD reported 10 arrests of evacuees: nine for minor drug offenses, and one for an assault that was not sexual, said Capt. John Anderson.
“That’s pretty mild for a city of 25,000,” he said.
Another official statement came from military police who did in fact arrest a child molestor at the Superdome:
The capture comes two days after rumors began circulating that a child molester was on the loose among the at least 15,000 New Orleans residents holed up at the dome, which the Guard is running as an emergency shelter.
A group of several civilians Wednesday night came to the SRT’s position in the dome and told them that they had just seen a man “inappropriately touch a child,” Watson said. While SRT was compiling a description, another group brought a man to the team saying he had tried to kidnap an infant.
“They told us he had touched one of their children in a sexual way,” Watson said. “They said we should take him before they take care of him.”
Watson said the man resisted arrest but was subdued within seconds.
It’s worth noting that the arrested man was only accused of “inappropriate touching.” You’d think that if there were acts of mass molestation and child murder going on, the crowd might have turned over those perpetrators before bothering with this minor creep.
So what’s it all about? Do people become savages when faced with horrendous calamities? Or do the savages in our midst just use the chaos as an opportunity to act out? It’s difficult to say, and in fact few people are even wondering. One opinion piece denounced the blame game:
As always, there were those whose first instinct was to make excuses for the inexcusable. “Had New York been closed off on 9/11, who can say what they would have done?” said Cynthia Hedge-Morrell, vice president of the New Orleans City Council. “When there’s no food, no water, no sanitation, who can say what you’d do? People were trying to protect their children.” By smashing jewelry counters and stealing cases of beer? By committing rape?
Good point. It’s probably pretty rare that raping anybody serves to protect children. This means that, if rapists are raping, they should bear the responsibility for their acts and not blame it on the hurricane or the subsequent flood. On the other hand, though, who’s to say that someone might not commit a rape out of some sort of post-traumatic stress disorder? If you thought the world was ending, what would you do? Collapse in despondent terror? Party like it’s 1999? Go on a bender and rape fourteen-year-olds? Probably you don’t know what you’d do until you have the chance — and hopefully you won’t ever have such an “opportunity.”
Then again, in matters sexual, it seems like there’s nothing that doesn’t have sex appeal for someone. If there are people who get off on corpses and excrement, then it should come as no surprise that there are people for whom hurricanes offer an exciting chance to get their rocks off. Finally, if you’re cynical and Christian, you might think that all this rape business is just a confirmation of Biblical prophecy. New Orleans deserved to be destroyed, certain fundamentalists are saying, because it was a hotbed of sin like Sodom and Gomorrah:
An evangelical Christian group that regularly demonstrates at LGBT events is blaming gays for hurricane Katrina.
Repent America says that God “destroyed” New Orleans because of Southern Decadence, the gay festival that was to have taken place in the city over the Labor Day weekend.
“Southern Decadence” has a history of filling the French Quarters section of the city with drunken homosexuals engaging in sex acts in the public streets and bars” Repent America director Michael Marcavage said in a statement Wednesday.
“Although the loss of lives is deeply saddening, this act of God destroyed a wicked city.” Marcavage said. “From ‘Girls Gone Wild’ to ‘Southern Decadence’, New Orleans was a city that had its doors wide open to the public celebration of sin. May it never be the same.”
“Let us pray for those ravaged by this disaster. However, we must not forget that the citizens of New Orleans tolerated and welcomed the wickedness in their city for so long,” Marcavage said.
“May this act of God cause us all to think about what we tolerate in our city limits, and bring us trembling before the throne of Almighty God,” Marcavage concluded.
That’s pretty hardcore to wish New Orleans “may never be the same.” While there are compelling points to consider in whether or not to spend the money to rebuild the city, these fundamentalist pricks — what else can you call them? — may be the ones ultimately willing to commit the worst rape of all. They’re not a depraved individual attacking a scared, helpless person in a kitchen. They want the whole city to sink into the mud — and it was a beautiful, charming, vibrant city, so it would be hard not to think that God had fucked us all by ruining it.
But the rapes aren’t surprising at all. You cram that many stressed out to the max people, including those who are criminals to begin with, under those conditions, and they will either act like animals or saints. And not much in between.
On watching Larry King tonight, I can confirm that were atrocities in New Orleans after the hurricane. Several photographs were shown of four people who were mutilated in the convention center. Whether it was done while everyone was there or whether it was done after it was evacuated was unclear to me. To be honest, the photos shown were quite gruesome and it was impossible to determine exactly what the picture was showing. There was a lot of blood and a lot of gore. The reporter, whose name I didn’t catch, said that they gave it a lot of consideration whether or not they should post the photos, but decided that they should be shown. He said that he would only show three out of four because the fourth photo was too graphic. I cannot imagine how bad that must have been since the ones shown were graphic and very, very sad.
What the hell would turn on someone in a hot superdome that smells like ass, shit, and piss. In these time you think that most would stick together. But, unfornately and fact this shows how much our race is not supportive of one another. We are the race more than an any other race that are quicker to hurt each other rather than help one another. We get so caught up in me me me my my my instead of our brother our sistas and I am also guilty of this.
Its just sad that the children had to fall victim to these evil vicous acts of the devil. If I could I sacrificed myself to prevent this pain from the Katrina children I would of. But, what goes around comes around 2x worse

Moreover, we could take the three-point shot and the forty-five second shot clock out of basketball which would return it to a game of plays and strategies, instead of the run and gun show our enemies have tailored especially for you. We could place the “palming penalty” and the “walking penalty” and the “charging penalty” back in to slow the game down to the point that defense and brains matter.
We could place the “bump and run” rule back in football and have referees start calling “offensive pass interference” again, to change the game to one where something more than straight-ahead speed is what matters. The “taunting rule” and the “roughing the quarterback rule” that we had to implement because of you, we could do away with completely, because civility would automatically come back into the game.
The race traitors of our race who hate their own culture and heritage could go with you, and we won’t offend them anymore either. For after a few generations of mixing with your race they would disappear into the dark tar-mix which your dominant design-genes make up.

There are more differences within any culture, country, or “race” than there are between any given culture, country, or “race”. With your twisted view of our nation’s history, you fail to realize that we have make grave mistakes against many nations and races, which you consider favors that have been ingraciously accepted. If you are so wise to the ways of the world, then why do you fail to provide at least a name, if not some credentials to back up your very loose interpretation of history? If ever I could understand how bad the divisions of races are in the most wealthy place in the world it would be now. I have surfed many sites dealing with the crisis in the south after the hurricane and I still can’t get my mind around how many white folks blame black folks for all of the problems. I’m white, Canadian and believe strongly that the terror and unnessary looting was committed by the already crimminal groups that thrive in the urban squalor of ghettos that exist in America. The overwhelming majority of the poor are victims just like the rich white folk, but these white folk seem determined to blame the whole race for the violence perpetrated by the criminal element within their adversarial ethnic group. The time is now for a radical approach to the problems of Federally Sanctioned Poverty. Our model in Canada is far from perfect but the poor have healthcare (not great but adequate), we have welfare and housing (once again not great but better than the USA). Until the issues of poverty and hopelessness are erradicated you can expect similar results in times of crissis. I have 3 friends who were there, in the superdome, and they managed to survive the violence they were subjected by those blacks. They told me face to face what had happened there. Tales of Horror!

Remember the Seattle Mardi Gras Riots back some fiver years ago, when dozens, hundreds of blacks, male and female viciously attacked, white people, particularly women right in front of thousands of white men who didn’t do anything while they stood and watched while those blacks beat, kicked, punched and abused, physically and sexually white women right in front of them!
Thousands of coward white men mind-washed by the PC MEDIA watched as big, fat black thugs abused white little girls and did NOT MOVE A SINGLE HAND TO HELP THEM.

You people don’t seem to realise what is going on here. This was originally a post about Katrina and its victims. I got on this website looking for some info on the nature state, describd by Thomas Hobbes(1588-1679), and pointed out as being what actually happened in New Orleans after the disaster. Hobbes defined humans as being naturally violent and self-centered. He defines society as being what maintains cohesion, and what makes us be civilised and not attack one another for no reason. An article the Courrier International de Paris, reffered to that belief, when records of rape, murder, and hate arose from New Orleans. The destruction of society led to a disrespect of any law, of any civil right. You people are now acting the same exact way, kinda proving Hobbes point. You make up fights on skin colors, on point of views, on levels of education and many other irrelevant factors. Please people, prove that asswipe Hobbes wrong, and show the good side of humanity. Beasts would have never been able, or willing, to create such a system to eliminate taht so called “natural” tendency to crime and abuse. We are human beings, so fucking act as such.
You know, race is just one of the many cruel weapons whereby human beings devide those they perceive as “us” from those whom they’s just as soon slaughter for the fun of giving pain, and I am in a way ashamed for being a part of this race…this HUMAN race, with all its divisions of color and class and sexual appetite. It really dosen’t matter whether blacks or whites are to blame, or which one instigates–or is the victim of–violence. The fact that we are capable of hating one another is pathetic enough for the whole damn argument.

My God, what an utterly hideous compilation of hatred, illogic, & misplaced wrath.
A few points:
First, the fellow who calls himself B harps upon his Christianity, but seems oblivious to the fact that his religion demands that he curb the hatred that seethes within him. He indulges in it with such devotion that I can hardly believe he’s got any left for the tenets of his religion, such as charity & lovingkindness. But I suspect he’s not really a Xian in any proper sense of the word. It’s rather more likely he’s just a bourgeois taking full advantage of the armor the Calvinist strain of Xianity he inhabits lends his kind. Ergo the jesuitical attempt to excuse the wrongs of European colonialists by dint of the wrongs of others (however exagerrated).
Secondly, the rascists who have posted here, as do all rascists, demonstate their inability to grasp the fact that violence of the sort they decry is far more strongly correlated with class than with race. As long as America is content to nurture with tainted milk a vast underclass among its children, it will have to put up with the uneducated coarse criminals among them.
The fact remains that the vast majority of the victims of Katrina were poor black people. They were victims, by & large, because they were too poor to help themselves (most lacking automobiles with which to escape in) & the governments (federal & local) tasked with helping them didn’t. They were poor because they were born into an underclass that the majority of the American populace is content to ignore until it directly impinges on their lives. The white (& black) Horatio Algers among us forget that the counterpart of pluck in Alger’s formula was luck. Luck is a distinctly hard thing to come by when you’re born into a world that prefers to hoard it among those who’ve already almost cornered the market in that commodity.
For the price of one month of the Iraq war, a levee system could have been built that would have ensured New Orleans couldn’t sink even after a direct Category 5 hit. For the same price, an educational system could have been instituted in New Orleans to replace the unbelievably rotten one that existed (exists) there, bringing with it all of its attendant civilizational benefits–one of which would be the eradication of a paranoid belief that all white people are as absurd & callous as the ones who have left their excrement in this comment section. (It’s worthy of note that neither of these things is going to be done even now that we see with crystal clarity the necessity of them.)
Either of those or any of a thousand other pragmatic efforts would have prevented the disaster, both natural & human, which these rascists shed crocodile tears over. (Of course, then they would have been deprived of a sterling opportunity to flaunt their half-baked analysis of societal ills & their half-unspoken remedies after the fashion of Adolf Eichmann.)
Instead, it’s enough for our racists to pleasure their sense of moral outrage & group superiority, well-lubricated with the drippings of antiquated genetics & a sociology that never existed. Why solve social problems when it would cost a single nickel from the coffers of the war machine & only have the lamentable effect of robbing them of their delicious Schadenfreude?
It’s more than obvious to most that their analysis of the dynamics of New Orleans before & after Katrina (or rather, their analysis of the myths that filter through to them as they sit in their La-Z-Boys in dens in suburbs of Cleveland & Seattle) doesn’t derive from scholarship or science.
What is equally obvious to me–a poor white man who lived in a mostly black neighborhood in New Orleans (S. Lopez St in Mid-City) before being driven out by Katrina–is that they don’t glean anything they say from actual contact with the poor black human beings who were devastated by the hurricane & its public handling only to find themselves stretched on the Procrustean bed of case-hardened hatemongers. I’ll be the first to admit that all was not rosy with poor black New Orleans, but I would be criminally remiss if I were to allow these rascists to ply one & all with their falsehoods, chief among them that the problems of the black people in New Orleans have invincible roots in the unredeemable sin of having been born black.
The true sin is that children, of all races, are born every day into an urban poverty which, if statistics are any guide, it is most unlikely they will ever see their way out of (whatever staggering numbers the GDP & NYSE attain), & which, if social science tells us anything, will foreordain them to a life of ignorance, struggle, & increased predisposition to crime & disease, & which, if the success other societies have had in remedying social problems of poverty can serve as any model for America, it is altogether wrong to assume as an inelucatble fact of life.
That sin, perhaps to the rascists’ chagrin, belongs not to any individual or impoversihed class, or any other easy target at which to cast stones, but to our society as a whole.
