One Million Homophobic Moms

“One Million Moms, a project of the conservative American Family Association, is up in arms over a recent gay oriented ad for Tylenol PM. This is the ad that prompted One Million Moms to ask its members to contact Johnson & Johnson. The OMM Web site warns readers before viewing the ad: ‘Be warned, it is offensive.’ On its Web site, OMM chastises Johnson & Johnson for being ‘a charter advertiser on the homosexual network LOGO’ and for the company’s ‘committment to financially support[ing] homosexuality.’ OMM is asking its supporters to call Johnson & Johnson and complain about this ‘offensive’ ad. Why call rather than send an e-mail? According to OMM, ‘Johnson & Johnson says they will ignore emails from OneMillionDads.com.’ And of course, if they are ignoring the right-wing dads, you know they’ll be ignoring the right-wing moms! Just in case you would like to call Johnson & Johnson to show your support, their toll-free numbers is (800) 962-5357, option 5.” —Southern Voice Online (US)

Here is a graphic of the advertisement that so offends One Million Moms. You’ve got to be a hardcore homophobic fundamentalist of some sort or other to find this ad objectionable. It may be gay, but it’s also relatively modest, even discreet. Perhaps it’s symbolic that the ad touts a “soothing new flavor” of Tylenol, vanilla. Because that’s what the ad is itself: vanilla.

Besides, it’s not as if the ad was intended to run in the New York Times or in some magazine for little kids. It’s running in The Advocate, which is the New York Times of gay and lesbian news publications. In other words, a gay ad is running in a gay publication — so what? How is it any business of One Million Moms? But apparently that’s the nature of fundamentalism. It doesn’t matter if the ad was entirely appropriate in its context. Fundamentalism objects to homosexuality itself.

One Million Moms claims that it objects to a major corporation such as Johnson & Johnson making a “committment to financially support homosexuality” — note both the misspelling of “committment” and the split infinitive (splicing the adverb “financially” into the verb “to support”). In addition, it argues that this opens the floodgates to homosexual advertising. Soon it “will become a part of your local cable package (if it isn’t already). While Johnson & Johnson voluntarily helps get the network off the ground, you will be forced to pay for it as part of your regular cable bill.” Oh, go pee your pants elsewhere. If homosexual advertising becomes a regular part of cable advertising, it’s because homosexuals are regular people living amongst you and watching the same tv channels. Johnson & Johnson is merely abiding by the law of supply and demand. Tylenol isn’t just for PMS anymore. Gay people need aspirin too.

I can’t think of a better word (perhaps my vocabulary is limited) to describe the one million mums website than “gay”. If a man conforming to the camp gay stereotype was asked to come up with a set of values it would be all that peace, love everyone.. the only difference is gay people are supposedly tolerant while fundamentalists like this are the reverse, not only do they have to try and perpetuate their intolerant beliefs, but they also believe theirs is the only opinion that matters, like the article pointed out, trying to get a vaguely homosexual advert removed from a gay magazine. Why was the “mother” who spotted this reading a gay magazine anyway? *raises eyebrows*

In summary: One Million Mums are assholes.

With all the headaches that conservatives and this “One Million MILFs” group will give gays after reading this nonsense, they’ll need a Tylenol…

Johnson & Johnson is sponsoring the ad. I’ll leave the irony of this to the student and know it will be lost on the OMM that are upset about it. Focus on more important things like getting your sons, nephews, neices and daughters out of harms way and conserving resources for the next generation. What a waste of energy.

In a televised interview with gays and lesbians, a woman once asked “Are we to be condemned for loving?” The short answer to homos is…no. But you are condemned for same gender sex acts! A person can’t help what goes through his or her mind. But they can help what they do about it.

The question, Joe, is why should they? To avoid offending the criminally stupid?

That is like a racist say well, I am offended that the Burger King ads on BET have black people in them instead of whites. What stupid bigots. Leave people alone, if you dont like gays, dont become one. Geez. If you are objecting gay publications and ads.. um.. stop reading your husbands stuff!

BTW I am the person who brought the LOGO station to my local provider~ They have Zena man! and some of the coolest programing.
