Bus Driver Ignores Rape for Ten Dollars

“A South Carolina bus driver is headed to prison after pleading guilty to accepting a $10 bribe from 2 students who sexually assaulted another student on the bus as he looked the other way. Lacey Jane Bolen, 26, of Goose Creek, South Carolina, pleaded guilty Wednesday to being an accessory after the fact to second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor. The bus has a 911 emergency panic button installed on the panel of the dashboard, but the driver never pushed it or reported the incident. However, the entire episode was recorded by a camera that runs constantly on the bus. ‘At any point, she could have stopped this from happening to this young girl,’ Assistant Prosecutor Kristi Harrington told the Associated Press. Another student reported the assault the next day and the bus driver as well as the 2-students were arrested. The teens were charged as adults with charges of second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor. Bolen faces 5-years in prison for his actions.” —AllHeadlinesNews.com (US)

This story has some loose ends that need to be tied before you can really fathom it. The newspaper accounts all referred to the driver, Lacey Jane Bolen, using both male and female pronouns. No amount of googling could turn up a picture of the person in question, though based on the name you’d think that it must be a she.

If that’s true, the next obvious question is this: why? Why would any woman (or man, for that matter) think that ten bucks was more important than the individual rights and personal security of the young victim? Was the bribe given before or after the crime? The whole thing is hard to explain. It seems likely, especially if the driver is really a woman, that there was some other compelling force — she was intimidated by schoolbus bullies, or she didn’t quite realize what was going on and dumbly accepted the money afterward, or maybe she was in a state of shock, privately reliving some moment of her own victimhood. How else could she fail to intervene, particularly when all she had to do was push a little button on her dashboard?

Was she just insensitive or indifferent? There were a dozen or so students on the bus when the incident occurred. A videotape of the incident showed, according to a local policeman quoted in a different source, that “half don’t want to be involved; the other half is just looking on.” And apparently none of them thought to intervene either.

This makes me physically sick I swear. Anyone who can stand by and not do all in their power to prevent sexual assult should be charged as full accessory to the assult and recieve full punishment. I would rather get beaten down than sit by and let a poor girl get raped.

OK I just read the second source which gave more information. Its only apparently rape because she was 14 and the boys were 16, but that it ’seems’ to be a concensual act. So im not quite as aggrivated as I was, still wrong yes, but the girl seems not to have been violently assulted like the first article give you the impression of.

The question on whether the driver was male or female, is still uncertain.

However, be it as it may, it strikes me, that the driver did nothing to stop the ‘rape’ from happening was because he/she was aroused by the act… abhorrent as the thought may be to most of us!

I think the people watching the video tape later also became sexually aroused. No one is innocent. The girl wanted it, the guys wanted it, the other people on the bus wanted to see it, the bus driver took the $10. The world takes a turn for the perverse.

For $20 I am sure they could have killed her and the bus driver would not do shit.

I guess the economy down south really is in the shit hole.

The 2 boys were BLACK. The bus driver was BLACK. The 14-year old girl was WHITE. Enough said. Stupid bus driver should never have pleaded guilty. If she would have gotten a black jury, there’s no way they would convict her since the victim is white. They rarely get 50% conviction rates in dense black neighborhoods.

I have to laugh at the whitepower post above. Look, I grew up knowing a lot of black girls who were raped by white guys and they didn’t bother reporting because they knew the cops wouldn’t care based on the victims being black. And if you’ve ever been assaulted or someone attempted to assault you as a kid and you had to deal with the cops you know they treat you like crap and don’t take it seriously unless you’re some blonde haired, blue eyed poster child.

The original story sounds like consensual sex between minors but was technically illegal. Plus there were other kids around (one of whom reported the sex). The bus driver made a mistake for allowing it.
