Indian University Bars Miniskirts to Deter Rape
“An Indian university plans to ban women from wearing miniskirts, tight tops and shorts, saying this will help to prevent rape. Mumbai University officials say they would prefer to see women students in a traditional salwar-kameez — a loose tunic top worn over baggy trousers — with no deep neckline. Vice-chancellor Vijay Khole said yesterday: ‘Attire should be such that it should not be offensive or cause distraction to fellow students and lecturers.’ Students have criticised the proposal, saying it is not the answer to prevent rape. ‘We are not children who should be told what we can and cannot wear,’ said 19-year-old student Alka Mehta. ‘Rape is not related to what the victim wears but what is in the mind of the rapist.’ The proposals follow a spate of rapes across the country, including the rape of a teenager by a police constable on Marine Drive, a famous sea-hugging road in Mumbai.” —The Star (South Africa)
Where rape is concerned, it’s almost always wrong to blame the victim. Granted, there may be a few exceptional cases where a victim genuinely “asks for it,” but these are far and few between. Rape generally happens because men are, at root, animals. Like dogs, they just want to hump whatever they see and then wander off into the night. The way to combat rape, therefore, is to encourage men to use their front brain to mediate their sexual impulses. Education can help, and “making an example” of a few rapists can also work wonders for enlightening the human animal.
Conversely, changing a university dress code will probably do nothing. You think women who live in traditional cultures that require modest dress don’t get raped? Hah! They probably get raped more than their counterparts in progressive societies, precisely because societies that require modest dress usually discourage victims from reporting or revenging the coercive acts performed on their bodies.
Besides which, who’s to say that a woman can’t look alluring in traditional attire? A Google search readily turns up many fine girls looking sexy in a salwar-kameez. For example, browse through the chicks on this Indian fashion site. This chick looks totally sultry in her traditional garb. Here she is again. Or how about in red? Her salwar-kameez does nothing to diminish the fine curve of her chest. If you were a rapist, would you turn away from this girl simply because she lacks a miniskirt to show you the skin on her legs? Hardly. She’s a hot chick and her garb does nothing to detract from it.
You’d better hope that the Indian subcontinent doesn’t plague you with an ark of white rats to rape the entire jewish conspiracy of rape and subersion. Fuck Israel
In some extreme cultures primarily in Vulcan, wearing a salwar-kameez would probably be considered overtly sexual. But at least it worked in Bangladesh so why not India :P
I find shalwar kameez on a women very alluring and attractive and I am a women myself. It is the garment that is so ermmmm. But one has to restrain themselves, for that is a noble quality. Men should practice!!
