If there were a moral to this story, it would be that lust unmediated by intelligence is opportunistic, even animalistic. In other words, have you ever wondered why sex in the animal kingdom is so unfettered by consensus? If a dog wants to have sex, it just chases down the nearest bitch (or chair or pant leg) and humps it. For the dog, rape is more or less the normal form of sex. If that’s true in nature, though, why is it that humans don’t act this way? Certainly the vestiges of this sort of thinking still reside in the male brain. When men see an attractive woman, they imagine pushing her into a doorway and sticking her. But they don’t do it. Why? Because their reason — or what Freud might have called their Super Ego — intervenes. They know better.
If you take a guy such as this thirteen-year-old Cambodian, however, he doesn’t know any better. He functions on the same level as a dog. He’s horny, so he gives a poke to whatever doesn’t provide too stiff a resistance — a dog, a pig, then a little girl. The boy is driven by genuinely animal lust, a term which refers not to the intensity of his sex drive but rather to its absence of reason or awareness. And this obviously makes it a strange case to prosecute. On one hand, ignorance of the law is no excuse. On the other hand, the boy really seems not to have understood that he was doing anything wrong. He was like an animal — and can an animal, lacking a moral conscience, ever really do anything wrong?
An animal that did this would be put to sleep. But an animal wouldn’t be able to learn to conduct itself properly. Presumably a human being can, even if he hasn’t yet.
You’re asking why humans don’t do it? I think a huge reason is that religious fanatics have been trying to get us to believe that we are, without a shadow of doubt, better than animals. We, as a species have been brainwashed into believing that sexuality is wrong, and we should be ashamed of that aspect of life. There is nothing immoral about sexuality. There is, however, a great deal of immorality involved in misguiding the weak through methods of fear and reward!
