Rafael DeJesus Rocha-Perez has been charged with Jeffrey Freeman’s homicide. Police say Freeman’s wife allowed Rocha-Perez to live in the closet of their four-bedroom home for about a month, undetected. But on Sunday, her husband heard snoring and found him. Freeman told his wife to get the man out of the house while he went for a walk. Martha Freeman told police that when her husband returned, Rocha-Perez confronted him with a shotgun, forced him into a bathroom and bludgeoned him.” —WSTM (US)

Sometimes it is just impossible to imagine what’s going on in the minds of people who commit these senseless, even stupid, acts. What woman in her right mind would literally conceal her lover in a closet — for a whole month? And what lover in his right mind would think he could get away with it? It’s like the subplot of some bad 18th century play, but at least in the play the lovers would live in a castle or someplace more commodious than the suburban home where this melodrama acted itself out. Didn’t the lover ever have to use the bathroom?

What makes it even more ironic is that the dead man, Mr. Freeman, was a private investigator who ran a business called Resifax. The web site of this business specifies that it’s a service for landlords to screen prospective residents: “Before they check in, we’ll check them out! Whether you manage one apartment in one location or have multiple units across the country, you’ll get fast, complete resident screening with ResiFax.” Somehow it adds insult to injury to think that the guy made a career out of screening prospective tenants but could barely discover the unwelcome guest living right in his own house. Such incompetence is so hard to believe that it almost makes you wonder if it was a setup somehow, as though the point was not to murder Mr. Freeman but to discredit his business.

Anyway, it’s a pathetic story. Have a look at the murdered man and his wife. Now read the self-pitying emails written by the depressive wife. Now have a final look at the faces involved — that’s the lover and accused killer to the right. Pathetic, right? These people are the poster children not for perversion or even adultery but for idiocy pure and simple.
