Pink Plates Proposed for Sex Offenders
“Some Ohioans convicted of drunken driving can be seen driving vehicles with yellow license plates. If one Ohio lawmaker has his way, sexual predators could soon have to drive vehicles with pink license plates, NBC 4’s Erin Tate reported. The bright yellow license plates help law enforcement officers recognize drivers with multiple DUI convictions… The pink plates could help notify police — and parents — of another type of offender. ‘It identifies them,’ said Rep. Michael DeBose, (D) 12th District. ‘The primary reason they can prey is because they’re camouflaged from who they really are.’ DeBose introduced a bill this week in the Ohio House suggesting mandatory pink license plates for sexual offenders so children know to stay away, Tate reported. ‘There’s such a problem — around rec centers, parks, school yards,’ he said. ‘There’s no way to identify them and to protect children.’ DeBose wants tough penalties for sexual predators who try to disguise themselves by removing their plates.” —Officer.com (US)

The first reaction you probably have when reading this story is outrage. “My God!” you think. “It’s the Scarlet Letter treatment all over again. It’s like the Nazis requiring homosexuals to wear pink triangles! It’s branding people like a cow, refusing them any prospect of redemption.” Then, as you think about it, you realize what a futile strategy it is for sex offenders. Ok, a car with pink plates belongs to a sex criminal. Will that stop pedophiles from borrowing, renting, or stealing cars in order to lurk outside elementary schools? Will that stop them from simply parking around the corner and approaching their victims on foot? What would you do — supposing you wanted to extend the principle — in a place like New York, where most people don’t own cars anyway? Would you make sex offenders wear pink shoelaces?
It’s easy to imagine this idea, however noble its intent, having zero effect on sex offenders. On the other hand, it’s also easy to imagine certain sorts of people thinking that pink license plates are the coolest. Hell, would you want that boring old state-colored license plate when you could get a vibrant pink one? It’s easy to imagine such plates appealing precisely to the same segment of the population that normally likes pink — young girls. And, uh, aren’t young girls precisely the group that Ohio wants to shield from sexual predators? Maybe they should give the perverts an uglier color less likely to appeal to ten-year-olds, like a brown the color of dog poop.
Not to mention the fact that if someone’s car had pink sex offender plates, wouldn’t there be lots and lots of people happy to key it? or attack the person who came out of it? The real problem is not the complete ineffectuality of it, the real problem is that it would most likely increase violence against these people and almost definitely vandalism against their vehicles.
Pink
Gives a whole new twist to “show me the pink….”
why not? name and shame thats what i say. why should they have a few years in jail then its all over when their victims have to live with the memory for life
All I have to say is. Hello Kitty would throw such a fit!
Ok this is a double post, but I just thought of something. Wouldn’t this just be totally backassward? I mean, everyone knows little girls like pink right? So a little girl would see the car and go “What a pretty liscence plate” and be interested in it.
Therfore actually luring the prey to the predator. Henceforth, I feel the liscence plate should be Puce. Nobody likes Puce.
To me it’s totally alien that these kind of offendors ever get to see the street again, forget about the cars. If someone has a perverse bent, then fair play – but if that involves forcing an unwilling participant into engaging in some act or other, and it ends up taking away their innocence – then I’m sorry, but the individual should never see the light of day again – in my opinion, the death penalty is too good for these kind of people. Forget the licence plates, what a lamer !!!!
For the people who have responded positively to this article: What about the (mostly) men in their early 20’s with the underage girlfriends?
The statutory rape laws and the sex offender regestries offer no distinction between the real predators and the 20-year-old guy with the 16-year-old girldfriend.
Is that really justice?
Obviously Rebecca and Richard are woefully uninformed about what incidents can get a person listed on the registered sex offender list. They better not ever have teenage sons or they may find themselves among the parents and families being witchunted by such unchristian people. Look at this list and consider it….
Who in Congress Belongs on the Sex Offender List?
Which of them ever in their life:
1. When they were 18 or older dated a person 15 or younger and had a make out session (fondled) that person? (statutory rape; intercourse not required)
2. When they were dating drank a lot and while intoxicated had sex with someone who said “no” at any point even if talked into saying “yes” afterwards (date rape)
3. Picked up a girl in a bar who had ID indicating she was 21 and had sex with her – and it turns out she lied about her age and was under the age of 18 (statutory rape)
4. Had an intimate relationship with an employee or someone they coached (abuse of position of power)
5. Urgently needed to urinate and couldn’t find a bathroom so they pulled over to use a bush (public urinating)
6. Thought it would be a funny prank to streak (Indecent exposure)
7. While taking a walk, glanced at a house and saw something indecent in a window (peeping tom)
8. Had tickling sessions with their child or niece/nephew and in the midst of this inappropriately touched the child (eg. Picked them up by the croutch)
9. Had a custody battle in which their spouse tricked their children into lying about them (he said/she said .. and the child cannot retract their statement)
10. Had a child dramatize and/or fib about what their parent had done (cannot retract)
11. Downloaded porn that included pictures of some girls who were supposed to be over 18 but they actually were under 18; or wanting adult porn and not realizing that some under 18’s were in the bulk file (child pornography)
How many of you have destroyed the lives of the mothers, fathers, wives, friends or children of the convicted sex offenders when the vast majority of the people on the sex offender list have done nothing more than the acts listed above? Destroying the lives of their families doesn’t save the life of a single child.
figures a democrat would think of this.how bout all liberals, get a black plate for their cars.liberalism is a mental disease
anybody oppose to pink license plates must be out there fucking mind. if a sex offender commits the act fuck them i would want to know if that predator lives in my neighborhood. anybody who comes up with excuses defending the rights of sexual pedophiles need to be investigated themselves. maybe they to are pedophiles
First off–as indicted from several posts–such a measure would be completely ineffectual and inappropriate to the crime, as well as a serious privacy breach and infringement of rights (to the famillies if not the offenders). It is further way too extreme for the potential indiscretions, listed by Connie, that can get you landed on this list.
All of this aside, the choice of the color pink particularly disturbs me. As a female, something with which pink is strongly associated–supported by the notion that young girls would be attracted to the plates–I tire before yet another negative association with women attached to a driving medium.
Of even deeper concern, however, is the association between pink and homosexuality (Nazis requiring the pink triangles?!) and the absurd and false correlation that will be strengthened between pedophiles and gays.
Seems like an awful lot of hidden agendas are being met irrespective of failing to even address the proposed issue at hand (protection of children from sex-offenders). And if not — how frightening still, the ignorance and lack of insight backing our decision-makers.
And for the record to all of the poet laureates responding with your oh-so-persuasive and well-founded arguments in favor of this measure: I, myself, was a victim of non-familial child molestation at the age of 4. The offender was an across-the-street neighbor who did not drive. Explain to me how this measure would have helped me?
Sex Offenders are already having a difficult time getting insurance coverage for automobiles. Imagine what life will be like when more insurance companies refuse to insure these “high-risk” drivers since they will now be the targets of “keying” (scratch damage by keys to the vehicle… think vandalism), vigilanty attacks (who wants to insure a vehicle against that), and other forms of risk to the insurance company. In the end the sex offender, whatever his/her crime, will be completely uninsurable. What will be their alternative to transportation then, the bus? And you want these deviants riding the bus? What then, prevent them from riding the bus? What will they do then? Loose their jobs and ability to support themselves… become the new dependency class… yes, you too can finance the welfare of all the unemployed sex offenders living in your town.
All this in the name of safety?
Fools! I don’t think so!
Wake up people! It is an unsafe world… drugs, murder, war, and, yes, sex crimes too. Get over it!
A typical example of stupid reactionary bs sold to a gullible public. This measure would not make anyone safer and it is just an incitement to violence.
I think this is a good idea. This would alert children when they see this color of plate. There should also be a rule that they have to drive that specific car with that license plate. I have thought of this very same idea myself, my daughter being a victim of gross sexual imposition. If anybody needs signatures, I am willing to help in any way I can. Think about how many pervs are out there. If this could save just one child from being a victim, I say go for it. Aside from castration, there is really nothing else that can be done. It would be nice if they all had to be forced to live on an island somewhere, but that is not realistic.
I’m all for the plates.. how many men or women will borrow their friends car with that plate on there? and i also think they should be in a chain gang and make the plates themselves.. sick bastards.. all those against must not care about innocent victims.
Being a victim of child molestation and torture myself, I can speak here.I was 7 yrs old. We suffer for life it cannot be undone. Forget the plates. We need laws that would allow procecution no matter how long ago the incident occured. And when it can be proven beyond doubt in the case of children then the death penalty or throw him in a room with one good woman and a crow bar. Then hang what’s left of him from the flag pole at the courthouse and send a message to the rest of them. The average molester does 66 kids. Think of it.
Wow, its amazing how increadible backwards an generally stupid the American public is.
I agree w/connie people really don’t know the scope of every so called crime that would affect innocent people from their families. A man was convicted of stat.rape by girlfriends mother they ended up married and are still married today he would be included as a sex offender. How stupid!
