Hooker Malls in Hungary
“The Hungarian Interior Ministry looks set to allow prostitutes to tout for business in shopping malls, local media reported on Tuesday. The ministry is thinking of allowing dedicated shopping centers where prostitutes could strike deals for sex as long as they move to a place of their own to carry out the transaction, the daily Nepszabadsag said. ‘There is nothing intrinsically wrong legally with an entertainment center without gratification,’ the newspaper quoted from a letter the ministry sent to the businessman who proposed to set up an ‘all-in-one’ sex plaza. Hungary allows local governments to set so-called ‘zones of patience’ for the country’s up to 20,000 prostitutes, but no municipality has done so yet.” —MSNBVC (US)

The shopping mall has come to occupy a prominent place in the center of American life, and apparently in the life of other cultures too. PervScan once spent a few days in the Pest portion of Budapest, which which was the equivalent of going to New York and staying in Queens rather than Manhattan. And oddly, one of the prominent things to remain in PervScan’s memory was a certain shopping mall in Pest — but there were no hookers there, because Hungary was still a Soviet country at the time and had not yet established its “zones of patience.”
One side effect of the propagation of shopping malls, however, is that the shopping mall — like any other genuinely public space — has become a venue for both the good and the bad that life offers. In every sleepy town in America, the shopping mall is not just a place for mothers to buy diapers and housewares. It is also its own little Times Square of local depravity with drug dealers, gay sex in the bathrooms, teens hooking up in the parking lot. If the prospect of a “shopping mall for sex” is shocking to you, then you haven’t caught on to the seamy underside that already exists in the shopping mall nearest to you.
Consequently, this enlightened proposal in Hungary simply adds a twist to an existing use of public space. Some shopping malls will have teenagers cruising each other. Other shopping malls will have johns cruising hookers. It sounds perfectly reasonable. What’s more, it offers all those societal benefits that come with legalizing prostitution. So why not? It sounds like a win-win proposal, and certainly it will give new meaning to the notion of “working at the mall.”
