Ever see Stanley Kubrick’s last film, Eyes Wide Shut ? PervScan loves the movie for Nicole Kidman’s performance, for the Christmas-lights cinematography, and for its modernization of the fin-de-siècle atmosphere of Arthur Schnitzler, an author PervScan also loves. Oddly enough, the one thing PervScan always hated about the movie was the pervy part — the big orgy scene in the middle of the film. It seemed so overwrought, so pretentious and grave, an almost silly notion of what an orgy thrown by a secret society of the rich and famous might be. It was like a fabrication from a cheap erotic novel put in the middle of this otherwise masterful film.

But Kubrick was not a master for no reason, and when you read this story of the VIP orgy in Britain, you’ll be convinced that the filmmaker must have known about this secret society. The Fever Club’s orgy lacked the masks and pseudo-Catholic ritual of the scene in Eyes Wide Shut , but otherwise it sounds about the same: glamorous people cavorting naked in a mansion. And somehow, at least when you read about it in the paper, it still sounds kind of silly. Maybe it was the most erotic thing in the world to be there, but when you hear about lawyers and models and heiresses groping each other on a bed the size of a basketball court, it sounds kind of embarrassing. Somehow it’s hard to get over the image of the naked harpist at the front door. How is that erotic?

Perhaps you’re thinking that there are different strokes for different folks — and that’s certainly true — or perhaps you’re thinking that PervScan should make some sort of erotic disclosure, a confession of personal tastes and distastes. What’s not to enjoy about a bed full of rich people fucking? Well, the short answer is that PervScan is interested in perversion, and this sort of group grope just doesn’t seem perverse. It’s the sexual equivalent of communal living in a kibbutz. Maybe it’s fun, if that’s your kind of thing. But how perverse can it be if so many people are doing it and reinforcing each other in it? By definition perversity is something that goes against the grain, “against nature,” and therefore it seems to be an oxymoron to speak of “mass perversity.” The perverse thing would be to attend a group grope and, because fucking is the norm there, abstain.
