Sex Offender Uses Registry to Look for Dates

“While fearful parents were searching the Megan’s Law sex-offender database for molesters, police said Glen Westberg, a registered sex offender himself, was perusing the Internet listing for a very different reason: a date. In what is considered the first case of its kind in California, Westberg, 35, has been charged with one misdemeanor count of illegally accessing the database as a registered sex offender. Authorities said he used the newly released online database of registered sex offenders to find potential dates, sending explicit letters to a handful of offenders in hopes of wooing them for sex. Westberg, a twice convicted child molester, faces up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine, if found guilty. ‘I never would have thought someone would have used this for dating or for soliciting people,’ said Santa Clara County prosecutor Steve Fein.” —Fox News (US)

Honestly it is difficult to see how this guy did anything illegal. If law enforcement agencies are going to release the names and addresses of sex offenders, then you’re going to end up with certain obvious consequences. Neighbors will be outraged about sex offenders moving in. Victims will look up their abusers and take revenge upon them. And certain weird sorts of people, like women who think that they want to be raped, will view the sex offender registry as a good source for potential dates.

And why not? Particularly when it’s a matter of one sex offender looking to hook up with others, it rather makes sense. The entire point of dating sites is to connect people with similar interests. Well, sex offenders obviously share the interests of other sex offenders. Is it illegal to let them hook up? Let them act out their deviant impulses on and with and for each other. Imagine if a gerontophile, a young person with a fetish for old people, could use the sex offender database to hook up with a pedophile, an old person with a fetish for young people. Wouldn’t it seem beautiful and harmonious?

It’s illegal because taxpayers shouldn’t be paying for a dating service.

Then why are they paying for one?
