Apparently prostitution is not exactly rampant in Patras, but perhaps that will change now that the city has been voted the Cultural Capital of Europe for 2006. Whenever a city ramps up for special events and other tourist attractions, it also creates opportunities for sex work.

But what about this shocked father and his hooker daughter? Nothing. Nada. No further details. The very brevity of the story makes it sound rather like a myth. After all, Greece has furnished the world with so many exemplary myths, why shouldn’t it also offer up a cautionary tale about the woes of prostitution? “If you patronize hookers,” it says, “you’ll give birth to hookers too.” You take young girls, but in the end — don’t all morals come at the end? — you end up giving young girls too.
