“Tacoma police have a warning about a pervert who is using the phone in an effort to trick women. Police say a man pretending to be a cop has called more than a dozen women in Tacoma and University Place over the past two months, telling them to go to the window and undress. Hard to believe this would work, but investigators say at least one woman fell for the scam. ‘No law enforcement agency is going to call and make that request of anybody,’ said Mark Fulgram with Tacoma Police. Investigators won’t say specifically what the man says on the phone as they don’t want to jeopardize the case, but detectives do want to end this scam soon.” —Komotv.com (US)

Try to imagine what the phone perv says to women when they pick up the telephone. “Hello, m’am, this is the police. Please strip naked by the window.” Um, not very convincing. “Hello, m’am, this is the third precinct. We are trying to trap a sexual predator in your neighborhood. Could you please help us out by removing your clothes while standing in your bedroom window? This will attract the perp and enable us to arrest him. I know it sounds strange, m’am, but this will help us to prevent innocent women and children from falling prey to this deviant sex fiend.” Hm, maybe some woman would fall for a story like this — but if she did, it would be more than likely that the thought of exposing herself to men in uniform was exciting to her.

It’s pretty hard to imagine that any woman would be so gullible as to think the police would have a legitimate reason to ask her to expose herself. Therefore it’s hard not to conclude that any woman who complies with the request is probably titillated by it. And that’s why creeps will make phone calls with this seemingly absurd request. It’s the shotgun approach. Phone enough people and sooner or later you’ll find one who’s either gullible or perverted enough to do what you ask, regardless how crazy the request is. It’s kind of the telemarketing equivalent of P.T. Barnum’s saw that there’s a sucker born every minute. At one out of every thousand phones, there’s a sucker waiting to do something weird.
