Is Prostitution a Male Right?

“A men’s rights group in South Korea submitted a petition to the National Human Rights Commission yesterday to protest the new sex trade law, which went into effect on Sept. 23. The petition, submitted by the president of the Korea Men’s Association, argued that the special law on the sex trade was ‘a violation of the human rights of men.’ The petition stated, ‘The enactment of the law that punishes sex trade violators and protects victims has caused 2,352 men to be convicted of criminal charges, and this law has infringed on men’s physical freedom, freedom of survival and happiness.’ It added, ‘The value of sex should be determined independently and freely, and should not be solved by the involvement of law enforcement authorities.’ The association was set up in 1999 to prevent reverse gender discrimination.” —JoongAng Daily (Korea)

While in principle most men would agree that being a john is a male right, not many would probably have the balls to stand up for that right. Though occasionally you see an unabashed encomium to the joys that prostitutes provide men, usually johns like to keep a lower profile — mostly so their wives don’t beat the heck out of them for cheating.

However, when you look closely at the issue, it’s rather strange to assert that you have the right to spend your money on the flesh trade. It cynically — but correctly — presumes that there will always be women or men willing to sell themselves, regardless of whether or not prostitution is legal. And it certainly overstates the case to say that forbidding prostitution infringes on “freedom of survival and happiness.” Happiness maybe, but survival? Unsated lust can make you feel like you’re going to die, but it’s not honestly going to kill you. At worst it might make you act in a stupid or unsafe fashion and thereby jeopardize your chances of survival, but then again running around with prostitutes is not necessarily the smartest survival strategy either. Ask anyone who ever got crabs, herpes, or worse from a hooker.

Furthermore, you can make a good argument using the principle that the law has no right to interfere with what a person wants to do with his or her own body. A hooker can say, “This is my body. If I want to use it for financial gain, then I’m no different than a model or a professional athlete, other people who use their physical qualities for financial gain.” But to reverse the argument and claim that you have a right to enjoy other people’s bodies, provided that those people are willing to give themselves to you, seems tenuous. That’s precisely the line of reasoning that the notorious German cannibal used to defend himself: the victim wanted to be eaten, so I did nothing wrong eating him. And that’s what these johns are saying too: the victims want to be screwed, so I do nothing wrong screwing them.

It’s not an entirely illogical argument, but it makes you wonder what role society has in determining whether a person should be allowed to victimize himself. Should a man be allowed to kill himself? Should a woman be allowed to prostitute herself? Or does society have some responsibility to “rescue” people even from their own acts of self-victimization?

Who defines the series of acts referred to as acts of “self vitimization?” Is smoking a cigarette an act of self vitimization? Is swinging with next door neighbors wife or husband self vitimization? Is going over the Niagara Falls in a wooden barrel to seek fame, fortune, or thrill self vitimization?
If the person is willing to submit themselves to these behaviors they certainly are exercising their instinctive freedom. Frankly, smoking, swinging, or doing crazy stunts are not valued equally by everyone, some might even believe that one or all of these behaviors are evidents of acts of “self vitimization,” but this definition is given by a spectator not the person performing the acts. Likewise, a prostitute may not agree that she is vitimizing herself, but a spectator seeing her being screwed may believe that she is a victim. Is a porn actress being screwed on a set receiving double penetration, a victim, probably not or maybe yes? Society is a spectator not the individual, society may provide alternatives such as literature and education to promote what other spectators believe are moral, but has no right in determing acts of “self vitimization,” but only acts defined as “vitimizing others.” Furthermore, who would collect on punitive or liabilities on harm done to oneself, but oneself; so if the person is not suing himself he is not a victim.

Society stopping self victimizaton? Society should mind its business. That right for two consenting adults to get down how they wanna get down is their business if anything they only have to answer to the Almighty. The idea is ridiculous and should be insulting to women.

If sex-trade is made illegal, you should punish both parts involved. If any contry had had half a brain, they’d put up state-owned bordellos that’d offer securety for both the custumer and the whore. Like regular doc checkups. Makeing something like that illegal just makes the problem with it worse.
That being said, when a man buys himself a whore when it’s illegal, and he knows it, he deserve what’s comming. Same as if you smoke pot if it’s illegal, or rob a store. whatever crime you want to asosiate it with, the guy knows what he’s risking. Don’t jump a cliff if you’re gonna whine about the fall. (And don’t whine about bruises if you dropped your parashoot.)
