Man Tax
“Swedish lawmakers have proposed a new tax on those who happen to be men that would go to paying the societal costs of abuse toward women. The idea by the Parliament’s Left Party was to be debated this week, reported the London Daily Telegraph. The paper cites an Amnesty International report earlier this year that found violence against women increased almost 40 percent in the nation during the 1990s and that 20 to 40 women are battered to death in Sweden each year. ‘It must be clear to all we have a gigantic social problem and cost in men’s violence toward, women and we must discuss how we are going to pay for it,’ Gudrun Schyman, the party’s former leader, told the paper. ‘We have to have a discussion so that men understand that they have a collective financial responsibility.’” —WorldNetDaily.com (US)
While no one is defending spouse abuse, there are obviously some difficulties with such special-interest-group taxing. First, it seems wrong to tax all men for the actions of a few idiots. There is already a punishment in place for men who beat their wives — it’s called jail. So why punish all the other decent guys who treat their wives with respect? Second, to tax one group at the behest of another special interest group raises the specter of ceaseless taxing. Where does it stop? Do you tax dog owners because their pets make noise and shit on the sidewalks? Do you tax people with body odor because they commit nose assault on perfect strangers? Besides which, another commentary points out that women aren’t the exclusive victims of spouse abuse. Here in the United States in 1998, “an estimated 876,340 violent victimizations occurred against women by intimate partners.” But there were also about 160,00 men who suffered violent treatment at the hands of their girlfriends and wives. So who pays for those wimps — er, guys? Would male victims of female abuse have to pay a tax intended to ameliorate male abuse? It doesn’t seem just.
If such a tax ends up being levied, the fair thing would be to levy a tax against women for the gendered injustices that they too commit. This could be to compensate abuse by female spouses, for example. Or there could also be a Nag Tax, paid by all women who possess mouths. Or perhaps there should be a Supplementary Sex Tax intended to provide financial relief to men who feel it is necessary to patronize hookers in order to supplement the dormant sex instincts of their frigid wives.
Taxation is robbery.
Man, this is so uncool, taxing all men just because other idiotic men beat on their wives is just ridiculous, there is a place for that called Jail and they deserve to be there!! The Swedish lawmakers want to Tax, and all the money goes back to the Government and they get richer from it, and people get poorer.
The man tax has to be one of the most rediculous things I have ever heard. Is it really a deterrent? Sure, it “punishes”, all men with this preemptive “punishment”, but all men would have to pay this, and the ones more prone to, and more likely to commit spousal abuse, won’t feel singled out because every other man is going through this, and therefore they don’t feel that they will be embarrassed and miss out on anything. It is just an inconvenience on everybody. As the article says, why do this to every man based on the actions of just a few idiots? A real deterrent is one in which one knows that if he or she will break the law will personally affect him or her. Prison for a long time, with a lot of other violent criminals, is a good example. The man tax is garbage!
