“A millionaire paedophile described as Britain’s most prolific child abuser was jailed for life yesterday. William Goad, 60, is believed to have molested 3,000 boys over 40 years. He once boasted of abusing 142 in 12 months… Mr Meeke said Goad abused boys in his home, his warehouse, on camping trips, in his van and at an isolated Dartmoor cottage. The abuse in most cases amounted to rape, sometimes several times. He usually paid victims £10 after raping them. Goad had links with other paedophiles and sometimes abused boys with other men. Once he raped an eight-year-old on a camping trip, telling a friend: ‘He can take that.’ Everything Goad did was geared towards meeting young boys, said Mr Meeke. He employed them at his shops and market stalls, owned two houses overlooking schools, ran a camping club, set up play zones, approached them in the street and offered toys and sweets. He paid boys a £50 ‘finder’s fee’ to introduce their friends and even asked one victim to snatch a five-year-old blond boy off the street so he could rape him. Mr Meeke said: ‘He told one boy he paid £15 for sex. On one occasion he boasted he nearly broke his record for one year of 142.’ He bought their silence by paying from £5 to £150 or threatening to harm their mothers.” —Mirror (UK)

Such epic proportions of abuse are astonishing. Somehow it strains credulity and makes the perpetrator sound mythical, like one of the grossly libidinous monsters in Sade. It’s one thing to go on a rampage and to perpetrate some ghastly deeds over the course of a week, a month, or even a year. But to carry on for forty years? To abuse some 3,000 boys? To put things in perspective, the death toll (according to Chapter 9 of the official 9/11 Report) from the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon stands at 2,973. At Pearl Harbor approximately 2,400 people were killed. That means Mr. Goad has personally abused more people than were killed in the two most violent acts of war against the United States. It’s no joke to say he’s a one-man army, kind of a pederast Rambo.

If he really did manage to convince some boys to sleep with him for a mere £15, then perhaps it lessens somewhat the scale of his abuse. It would be easy for a millionaire to afford 142 boys in a year at that rate. The weird part about the finances is that it’s not quite clear how much Mr. Goad was worth or where he got his money from. A story by the BBC mentions that he “was a successful and wealthy businessman who boasted of being a millionaire but police have not managed to trace his assets.” If you google him, the only thing search results concern his incredible pederasty. Which seems odd, since in this day and age you’d think that almost every millionaire businessman would seep onto the internet somehow. Didn’t his businesses have web sites? (Williamgoad.com does not appear to be his.) Didn’t any of his shops ever apply for some kind of document or permit that would leave an online trace? It’s weird. It almost makes you wonder — are his self-proclaimed millions imaginary? And if so, would that mean his epic numbers of abused boys are inflated too?
