There are two morals to this story. The first is obvious. If you drink too much you might end up doing something you regret. The second is not so obvious. When you read the story, you laugh at the guy, since there’s nothing funnier than seeing foolishness punished by fate. Then you wonder whether or not he did the right thing to run away from the hospital. After all, if somebody wanted to cut off your penis, you’d probably run away too. And yet, if that’s the only way to save your life, isn’t it suicide to run away? Faced with the choice between death and emasculation, wouldn’t a fairly large number of guys choose death?

The gravity of this choice is what underlies the story’s second moral — which is that, if you check into a hospital and the doctors say the “only” course of action is to amputate your Pride and Joy, go get a second opinion. Run to the nearest gangrene specialist and beg for the most advanced treatment in the world.

Hopefully that’s what this Romanian guy is doing. Hopefully he’s in a Swiss clinic getting the latest treatments applied to his suffering member. Otherwise he’s dead.
