Are you sick of wrapping your baby boy in blue? Then try the infant pimp costume. Do you fail to think your baby girl looks pretty in pink? Then make her up as a newborn ho. It’s not only the latest thing to do, it will let her know — from the youngest possible age — what being a woman in this world really amounts to: meat.

Seriously, though, this story raises some fascinating questions. If you think about it, Halloween costumes are usually pretty frightening. Innocent little kids dress up as the very same entitites that would cause them to wake up screaming from nightmares. Vampires, ghouls, monsters, serial killers, murder victims (cf the “butcher-knife-in-the-head” look) — it’s such a panoply of horror that you almost wonder if it serves some apotropaic or talismanic function, warding off evil precisely by impersonating it, flirting with it. And if that’s the case, then it would make good sense to dress toddlers and tots as the worst specimens of humanity precisely so that they don’t become them.

(P.S. The article notes that, of those pimp and ho costumes that have been sold, ninety percent went to California, New York, and Florida. Hm, in spite of their Republican governors, these are typically considered liberal states. Could this become a campaign issue? You can see the politicians on the stump now: “What kind of world is it when little girls dress up like hookers and literally put the trick into ‘trick or treat?’”)
