Lab Tech Gropes New Moms
“An Orange County hospital lab technician has been arrested for allegedly molesting new mothers in a maternity ward. Dante Arnaud allegedly fondled seven women after they had given birth at the Garden Grove Hospital and Medical Center… Police say Arnaud came into mothers’ rooms on the pretense of taking blood samples and conducting breast and vaginal examinations.” —KESQ (US)

It is always compelling to contemplate perverse behavior. You can’t help but want to understand what drives people to do the weird, deviant things that they do. In most other areas of human endeavor, motives are relatively transparent. People do things for greed, ambition, power, love, money. But perverse behavior, conversely, tends to be opaque. Sometimes you can see that it’s driven by lust — but even then it seems to be some distorted type of lust, a lust mixed up with traumas or fetishes or psychopathologies that have absolutely nothing to do with sex itself. It’s like lust in a mirror darkly.
Which brings us to the lab tech groping new moms. What’s going on in his head? On one hand, it could be very simple. New moms are subjected to frequent exams of an intimate nature. Maybe the guy figured it would just be easier to get away with performing impromptu vaginal exams on new moms than on victims of lung cancer. On the other hand, maybe there is something else behind it. New moms are not usually at their attractive best, what with their traumatized innards and excess pregnancy blubber — but maybe it was precisely this that the guy fetishized. There are men who get off at the sight or the taste of breast milk — maybe there are guys who take it a step even further than that. They pursue their Oedipal lusts back to the very site of the primal trauma. They fetishize Caesarean sections, rub themselves with umbilical cords, jerk off with afterbirth.
