You’ve seen them on the side of the highway, dragging a garbage bag along the curb as they pick up Coke cans and condoms. Here in New York you see them in the parks, competing with the rats for beer bottles and banana peels. They’re the two-bit offenders who get sentenced to “community service” but are too poor or unlucky to do their time bringing hot meals to cancer patients. Instead they get garbage duty, litter service, trash time.
It’s never fun to pick up other people’s waste. It stinks. It’s filthy. It’s full of things that trigger instinctive gag reflexes — decayed oranges, rancid mayonnaise, spent tubes of hemorrhoid cream, roach motels full of dead bugs. That’s what makes it a good punishment: unlike some of the other types of community service people luck into, garbage duty is inherently unpleasant. But is it so unpleasant that you’d spread your legs for a fifty-something litter chief?
It may be that the boss of the litter crew is a handsome stud — the article doesn’t say — but odds are that he’s not, which makes the woman’s choice to sleep with him really fascinating. Which is worse — to bang the old guy? Or to pick up shit that people like him throw out their car windows? Most people would probably choose to join the trash crew, but apparently this lady preferred the sex. Maybe it was good sex. After all, she gave herself to him “several times.” Or maybe she was just an ex-hooker — the article doesn’t say what her offense was — so screwing him was no big deal.
