To the civilized inhabitants of the western world, it must sound pretty shocking when some women sing and dance while others get their limbs broken and their orifices — well, you know what happens to those poor orifices. But evidently some hatreds take precedence over others, and there in Africa racial prejudice overrides gender solidarity.
Besides which, it shouldn’t be so shocking that soldiers enjoy a little mood music while brutalizing the enemy women. Ergonomic studies have shown that people work better when they listen to music, and apparently that’s also true of soldiers. They do their gory work better with the help of a soundtrack too.
Which raises an obvious question: What’s the best rape song? Would it be “Singing in the Rain,” in honor of the famous rape scene in Stanley Kubrick’s film A Clockwork Orange? Would it be “Rape Me” by Nirvana? Or how about the unforgettable “Rape Song” from the Fantasticks soundtrack? Go read the lyrics if you want to read a good rape song: “Why invite regret / When you can get the sort of rape you’ll never ever forget?” Or maybe something edgier and more contemporary would fit the bill, such as Eminem’s “Who Knew.” You can imagine soldiers turning some of that song’s lyrics into a rape chant: ‘You want me to fix up lyrics while the President gets his dick sucked? / Fuck that, take drugs, rape sluts / Make fun of gay clubs, men who wear make-up / Get aware, wake up, get a sense of humor…’”
There’s also a metal song by Strapping Young Lad called Rape Song, but it’s anti-rape, so I suppose the lyrics would be inappropriate. You can’t get much encouragement from lines like “Rape is just another excuse for murder… You fucking pig, now YOU die!”
